OKLAHOMA CITY - OKC Energy FC has announced the signing of goalkeeper Evan Newton, General Manager Jason Hawkins announced today. Newton most recently played with USL's Arizona United SC and was the seventh overall pick by the Houston Dynamo in the 2011 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft.

"I'm excited to have Evan with us," said Energy FC Head Coach Jimmy Nielsen. "He is a well-schooled goalkeeper that is very technical, tactical and clever. He has good experience and performs well in stressful situations."

The Virginia Beach, Virginia, native spent his first professional season with Houston before joining FC Tampa Bay on loan. Newton signed with the San Jose Earthquakes prior to the 2012 season and played 45 minutes in a friendly against Swansea City for the team.

Newton was the starting goalkeeper for Arizona United SC during the 2014 season. He recorded five shutouts with a 1.71 goals against average and .703 save percentage. He went 10-13-5 for Arizona in 2014.

"I'm excited to be in Oklahoma City," Newton said. "We have a good group of guys and everyone has appeared sharp during preseason. It will be great to play in front of The Grid and to finally not be on the receiving end of their banter. I look forward to helping bring a championship to OKC."

Newton played collegiately at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, where he is the program's all-time leader in saves (254) and shutouts (36). He led the Monarchs to three NCAA Championship appearances, including a four-save performance in a 1-0 first-round win over defending national champion Virginia in 2010. Newton was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region second team and All-Colonial Athletic Association first team as a senior.

Newton was named the USL PDL Goalkeeper of the Year in 2007 while playing for the Hampton Roads Piranhas. He was also a participant in the U.S. U-17 residency program in Bradenton, Florida. Newton was a three-time NSCAA/adidas youth All-American.
