
Offensive Woes Continue for 'Cats, Fall 7-1

Salem, VA - The Red Sox scored seven unanswered runs after an early strike from the Hillcats, cruising to the win Thursday night. LHP Chris Hernandez continued his dominance against Lynchburg, tossing five innings allowing just one run for the fourth time this year.
Taking advantage of an error in the top of the first, the Hillcats took an early 1-0 lead. Andrelton Simmons reached on the error. Barrett Kleinknecht then singled on a softly hit ground ball to second base. Phil Gosselin's sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third before Joey Terdoslavich grounded out to shortstop plating Simmons.
The game went one-sided from that point on. A two-run home run for Bryce Brentz in the fourth put the Red Sox up 2-1.
Salem padded their lead in the fifth. Derrik Gibson doubled home a pair with one out. After a strikeout, Jorge Padron singled in Gibson putting the Sox up 5-1 and knocked starter Blaine Sims out of the game.
RHP Mark Lamm entered the game and got a line out from Brentz to end the frame. Lamm stayed in through the sixth, allowing just one hit and no runs.
The Red Sox offense capped off their night with another two-run home run in the eighth. This time it was Mark Wagner leaving the yard of Hillcats' reliever Andy Russell. Salem led 7-1.
RHP Chris Martin was perfect through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. He stayed in to finish the game in the ninth. After retiring the first two batters, Joe Leonard snapped his streak of 11 straight retired with a line drive single up the middle. The next batter, Shawn McGill then grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice to end the game 7-1 in favor of the Red Sox.
Hernandez (9-5) went the first five innings for Salem earning the win allowing just one unearned run. Sims (3-5) gave up five runs, all earned, through four and two-thirds innings and took the loss. With four scoreless innings of relief, Martin recorded his fourth save of the season.
The Hillcats fell to 9-18 in the second half, while the Red Sox improved to 12-15.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 pm in Salem. RHP Aaron Shafer (3-2) will start for Lynchburg against RHP Ryan Pressly (5-9) for Salem. The Hillcats On-Deck Show will go on the air at 6:40 pm. Listen live to all the action on 105.5 KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com.
