San Rafael Pacifics News Release
SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - San Rafael Pacifics starter Logan Odom tossed a complete game one-hitter that included six and one third innings of no-hit baseball on Tuesday night en route to an 8-0 victory over the East Bay Lumberjacks.
Mike Taylor broke up Odom's bid for the no-no in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle. However, a nicely turned 6-4-3 double play kept the Lumberjacks (1-19) off the board.
"I felt good out there, like I'm not trying to do too much." said Odom. "I just let my defense work, let them clean up all the groundballs. I have a lot of confidence in my defense."
It should come as no surprise that the towering righty cut up the Lumberjacks at the plate. On July 11 in Hilo, Odom held the Hawaii Stars hitless for five and a third innings. Odom - who entered with a 2.27 ERA, second best in the Pacific Association behind teammate Tyler Pearson - lowered his ERA to 1.93 and thus surpassed his teammate and took the league lead. With the win, he improved to 6-0 in seven starts, and has gone at least six innings in all of his starts.
"We call Odom the 'Big Easy.' He knows that if he just challenges the strike zone that they can't really hurt him," said Pacifics Pitching Coach Jeff Russell. "A lot of success has come from the starting pitching this year and it's making our bullpen stronger and the offense is swinging the bats well."
In the second inning, Pacifics (34-12) third baseman Kyle Dhanani was hit by a pitch, then got a great jump off of pitcher Francisco Leon (0-1) and easily stole second. A high throw from catcher Matt Lucchesi sailed into center field, which allowed Dhanani to get up from a head-first slide and sprint around third to score.
In the bottom of the third, designated hitter Johnny Woodard roped a double to center and drove home Chase Fontaine from second to double the Pacifics lead, 2-0.
In the sixth, the Pacifics capitalized on three errors by Danny Wansley. The second baseman bobbled an easy grounder off the bat of Danny Gonzalez, then threw to an empty first base, seeming to mistake Jeff Russell (coaching first) for a teammate. Russell hit the deck and the ball ended up in foul territory, which allowed Woodard to score all the way from first. After Darrick Hale walked and catcher Matt Kavanaugh reached on another Wansley error, center fielder Zack Pace drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to 4-0 and chase Leon from the game.
A Gonzalez walk in the seventh inning plated Dhanani and San Rafael added three more runs in the eighth.
The two teams meet again for the second of a three-game series on Wednesday, July 24. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available at www.pacificsbaseball.com.
