O'Connell Commits to UMD

Waterloo, Iowa - During the past decade, Waterloo Black Hawks alumni have earned a combined total of 11 NCAA championship rings while playing for the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and today current Hawks forward Gavin O'Connell announced that he will join the Bulldogs after completing his United States Hockey League career.

The 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pound Wayzata, Minnesota-native came to Waterloo this season after being selected during Phase I of the 2020 USHL Draft. O'Connell has played in all 11 Black Hawks games this season, recording five assists. That includes an assist in his USHL debut and a pair of points in Waterloo's 8-4 win versus the Lincoln Stars on October 23rd.

Last month, NHL Central Scouting graded O'Connell as a "C" prospect for the 2022 NHL Draft on the service's 2021/22 Preliminary Players to Watch list.

Former Hawks J.T. Brown, Mikey Anderson, Jackson Cates, Nick Swaney, Dylan Samberg, Peter Krieger, and Hunter Lellig have all been part of NCAA title-winning efforts at Minnesota-Duluith in 2011, 2018, or 2019. Anderson, Krieger, Samberg, and Swaney each won two NCAA championships while skating for the program. Brown, Anderson, and Cates have all gone on to appear in the National Hockey League. Swaney and Samberg are each signed to NHL contracts in anticipation of their league debuts.

The current Minnesota-Duluth roster includes Lellig, who is now a senior, as well as freshman Kyler Kleven, who played in Waterloo last season.
