Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons catcher delivered a two-run double in the top of the 11th inning as the Herd defeated the Syracuse Chiefs, 5-3, Saturday night at NBT Bank Stadium. The victory gives Buffalo two straight against their Thurway Cup rival with a chance to sweep on Sunday night.

Owner of one of the two Bisons' walk-off hits this year, Ochinko lined a 3-1 fastball from Syracuse's Evan Meek into the right-centerfield gap with one out in the 11th. As the ball rolled all the way to the outfield wall, teammates Andy Burns and Daric Barton came around to score for the game-winning tallies.

Ochinko had three of the Bisons nine hits on the night, obviously none bigger than his extra inning-double. The rally started when Burns reached second base with one out as Syracuse third baseman Rick Hague threw his grounder away. Meek intentionally walked Barton to set up the doubleplay and the righty-righty matchup against Ochinko. The Bisons catcher, however, made them pay by handing Syracuse their league-worst 46th defeat.

It's the second game-winning hit for Ochinko in 2015. The catcher had a two-run walk-off double in a 5-4 win over Lehigh Valley on April 19. He's now hitting .288 on the season.

Buffalo had built a 3-0 lead and looked to be in total control of the contest early. Caleb Gindl led off the fourth inning with his second home run of the season to get the Bisons on the board. An RBI-single from Matt Hague as part of a two-run sixth inning put the Herd up by three.

Syracuse erased that advantage with one swing. Syracuse's Kevin Keyes hit a three-run double in the sixth inning off Felix Doubront to deny the Buffalo starter his first win with the Herd.

Doubront, who entered the game with a 0-3 record despite a solid 2.65 ERA, retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced Saturday night before running into trouble in the sixth. He stayed on to match a season-high seven innings of work, striking out eight and walked just two.

Chad Jenkins earned the win with an inning of shutout relief. His five notches in the victory column ties Randy Wolf for the most on team. Bobby Korecky retired Syracuse 1-2-3 in the 11th for his fifth save of the season.

BISONS NOTES:

Bobby Korecky's 27 saves in his Bisons career are now tied for 3rd most in the modern era, just three behind Buffalo saves leader Fernando Cabrera...Syracuse nearly won the game in the ninth inning, but Josh Johnson was thrown out at home when former Bisons outfielder Darin Mastorianni grounded into a fielder's choice with one out...Doubront's eight strike outs in the game also matched a season-high for the southpaw.
