Oakland Roots to Call Former Oakland Raiders Training Facility Home for 2022
December 21, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Oakland Roots News Release
Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots Sports Club has agreed with the City of Oakland and the County of Alameda on the terms of a license agreement for the former Oakland Raiders performance center located at 1150 Harbor Bay Parkway in Alameda, California for the 2022 Season. The agreement will see the second year USL Championship soccer team gain access to a high level professional training center for the players and technical staff.
"This is an incredible next step in the growth of this club," said Roots Technical Director Jordan Ferrell. "The club has come a long way since its founding just over two years ago. The support has leveled up, the recognition has leveled up and the play on the field has leveled up. One of the next steps to our process is a facility for training that allows us to level up the performance environment our staff and team work in on a daily basis. We now have that facility right in our backyard."
The license agreement calls for the Roots' use of the former performance center, consisting of an 18,000 square foot building with indoor training facilities and a 120,000 square foot sports field. The players and staff will have access to grass fields and weight rooms on par with the top sports organizations in the world.
"We are really pleased that we can support Oakland Roots in this way," said Betsy Lake, Assistant City Administrator from the City of Oakland. "The club is a valued member of the Oakland community and we are happy the Roots can make productive use of the asset in the interim, while the City and County are readying the property for disposition."
"We thank the County and City for working with the Roots to make the performance center available to the Roots for the 2022 season," said Roots Real Estate Advisor, Lydia Tan. "It's a win-win arrangement that the space to be put to use, reduces the Agencies' carrying costs for the year, and provides a high quality venue for the Roots to train."
"Having a first-class training ground helps attract and retain top players and helps galvanize the entire organization," said USL President Jake Edwards. "We're thrilled for Oakland and this opportunity to make this facility their home."
The 2022 season begins in early Spring, and preparations begin now for Roots' second season in the USL Championship.
