Oakland Roots Sports Club Announces Venue Plan for Remainder of 2023 USL Championship Season

We will play the remainder of the 2023 USL Championship season at California State University, East Bay in Hayward, California. Games will continue to kickoff at the scheduled times.

"We have had a wonderful time at Cal State East Bay," said Oakland Roots President Lindsay Barenz. "While we are disappointed to not be able to return to Laney this season, we are thankful to the Cal State East Bay staff and Athletic Department for being so supportive and welcoming to us. The games at East Bay this season have had an incredible atmosphere thanks to our amazing fans."

All tickets purchased for any game previously scheduled at Laney College will still be valid at Cal State East Bay. Food and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the season, including beer and wine. Cal State East Bay has provided the club with the ability to also welcome new fans to game days, drawing some of our largest crowds.

"We are thrilled to host Oakland Roots at Pioneer Stadium for the remainder of their season," said Cal State East Bay Athletic Director Allison Kern. "CSU, East Bay has a long history of supporting the community and we recognize the impact the Roots organization has had on the Bay Area. I am proud that we can be a partner in creating an exciting experience for the fans. Welcome, Oakland Roots!"

We explored all options and expert opinions to return to Laney College this season. Unfortunately, our turf field is incompatible with Laney's new field that was recently installed, meaning we cannot meet United States Soccer Federation and United Soccer League standards for our games. We look forward to our Interim Stadium efforts at the Malibu Lot (adjacent to the Coliseum) that will provide Oakland Roots, Soul, and Project 51O a home in Oakland for the next 10 years. More information on the project will be released in the coming weeks.
