Oakland Roots News Release
This Saturday October 14th, the Oakland Roots & Soul Foundation will kick off its annual giving campaign at the final Oakland Roots home game of the 2023 season.
Oakland Soul players Miranda Nild and Sam Tran will be present to take pictures, sign autographs and talk about the work of the Foundation to support local youth.
The Oakland Roots and Soul Foundation (ORASF) works collaboratively with communities to enhance the health and well-being of every resident, working specifically at the intersections of race and gender equity and sports in Oakland.
Based on five years of research as part of Positive Coaching Alliance's Youth Sport Racial Equity Initiative piloted in Oakland, ORASF is committed to three strategic initiatives.
Safe Places to Play - collaborating with local government, school systems, nonprofits and philanthropic partners to create new, safe places to play for Oakland and East Bay youth.
Sports Equity - tackling the barriers to participation in sports by training and equipping more coaches and supporting low and no-cost safe, high-quality programming.
Justice Fund - direct grants to organizations engaging in racial and gender justice work and other organizations working for a more just and equitable Oakland and East Bay.
One of the Foundations' immediate goals is to support the construction and programming of a community sports park on a vacant uptown lot in partnership with Oakland School for the Arts and local non-profit Skate Like a Girl. (Link to Chronicle story)
The Oakland Roots and Soul Foundation is a registered 501c3 non-profit organization. For more information on how to support the Foundation visit https://www.oaklandrootssc.com/foundation/.
