MONTCLAIR, NJ - New York Red Bulls II (2-16-3, 9 points) fell to New Mexico United (10-3-8, 38 points) 2-1 on Sunday, July 31, at MSU Soccer Park.
The visitors opened the scoring in the ninth minute, as Neco Brett converted a low pass from Jerome Kiesewetter.
Red Bulls II equalized in the 55th minute. After an initial clearance from New Mexico, Steven Sserwadda collected the ball, maneuvered through defenders, had the ball initially poked away but recovered to send a shot into the back of the net.
New Mexico regained the advantage in the 90th minute, as Will Seymore headed in a corner kick that was served in by Jusin Portillo.
The goal for Sserwadda was the first in his USL Championship career. The midfielder made his first appearance for Red Bulls II since May 27.
Giannis Nikopolidis tallied four saves in the contest, including a stop on a penalty kick from Portillo in second half stoppage time. Portillo was five for five on penalties this season prior to that save.
Following the match, New York will remain home to face Memphis 901 FC on Wednesday, August 3, at MSU Soccer Park. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET with coverage available on ESPN+.
