Modesto Nuts News Release

LANCASTER, CA. - Ljay Newsome matched a career high while the Modesto Nuts used timely hitting to lock up a 7-4 season-opening victory against the Lancaster JetHawks on Thursday night at The Hanger.

Cal Raleigh put the Nuts (1-0) in front with a solo home run in his first at-bat of the season. The JetHawks (0-1) tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.

Ljay Newsome (W, 1-0) set the tone for the Nuts early. He struck out six batters in the first two innings on his way to a career-high-tying nine strikeouts.

The JetHawks took the lead in the third with a pair of solo home runs but that was all Newsome would allow. Newsome worked five innings allowing four hits and three runs with no walks.

Luis Liberato sparked a rally in the sixth when he smacked a leadoff home run over the center field wall against reliever Nate Harris (L, 0-1). Anthony Jimenez followed with a triple before scoring on Connor Kopach's RBI double. Gareth Morgan delivered the lead with a RBI single.

Liberato and Jimenez added RBI in the seventh inning.

The Nuts' bullpen combined to work four innings allowing just one run. Sam Delaplane heaved two scoreless frames for the save while recording three strikeouts.

The Nuts take on the Lancaster JetHawks in game two of the year on Friday night at The Hanger. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 6:20 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
