Modesto Nuts News Release
MODESTO, CA - Modesto's offense went frustrated against another Bakersfield starter as the Blaze picked up a 5-3 win over the Nuts on Friday night at John Thurman Field.
The Nuts (31-37) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second after a 2-run triple by Taylor Featherston, but saw their lead slip away as the Blaze (28-40) outscored Modesto 5-1 over the final seven innings.
Bakersfield plated a run in the third against Nuts starter Eddie Butler on an infield RBI single by Juan Silverio. That's all the Blaze would muster against Butler, who was inexplicably removed from the game after throwing only 59 pitches. He allowed only one run on three hits, while striking out five and walking just one.
Modesto led 2-1 until the sixth when Geoff Parker took over for Butler in relief and gave up four runs in the inning without recording an out. An RBI single by Steve Selsky tied the game, and a 2-run double by Silverio gave the Blaze their first lead of the night. Parker exited after giving up three hits and two walks, leaving with a 2-0 count to Kyle Waldrop. Russell Brewer took over and after finishing the walk to Waldrop, got David Vidal to ground into a double play and closed the inning with no more damage. Parker (3-4) was charged with the loss as the Nuts were not able to recover.
Blaze starter James Allen (5-5) cruised through his final five innings after allowing the triple to Featherston in the second, limiting the Nuts to only two scattered hits the rest of the way. Allen allowed only five hits in seven strong frames for the win.
Modesto pulled within a run in the eighth as Taylor Featherston opened the eighth with a double against Pay Doyle, and promptly scored on an RBI single by Ryan Casteel. Doyle would quickly put out a Nuts rally, retiring the final six batters of the game including five via strikeout for his second save of the year.
After losing four straight, and the first two in the series to Bakersfield, the Nuts will try to snap their skid tomorrow night with their ace Dan Winkler (8-2, 2.35) on the hill. Bakersfield will counter with RHP Mike Dennhardt (3-5, 4.09). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
