Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (June 21st, 2013) -- In front of a sell-out crowd of 4,124, Modesto raced out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back en-route to a 10-6 win over Visalia on Friday night at John Thurman Field.

The Nuts (2-0, 34-38) were outhit by the Rawhide (0-2, 39-33) by a 11-to-7 margin, but took advantage of a wild Visalia pitching staff, drawing a season-high nine walks to go along with three hit batters and three Rawhide errors.

Modesto got the scoring started in the first against Rawhide starter Conrad Flynn, as both Brian Humphries and Taylor Featherston scored on a play with two errors committed by third-baseman Gerson Montilla.

The Nuts would make it 4-0 in the second as Humphries drove in Harold Riggins with a sac-fly, and Featherston followed with a 2-out RBI single.

After three hitless innings, Modesto starter Eddie Butler ran into trouble in the fourth, giving up an RBI double to Jon Griffin to make it 4-1.

Modesto then blew it open with a 3-run fourth against Flynn. After a sac-fly from Featherston, Nuts DH Ryan Casteel blasted a 2-run homer to make it a 7-1 score. It was Casteel's second home run in as many games, and team-leading 15th of the season.

Butler (3-1) ran into more trouble in the fifth, giving up three runs (one earned) to finish his night. He would pick up the win, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits, while striking out eight and walking just one.

Following Casteel's home run in the fourth, Flynn was ejected from the game after plunking Jared Simon. Flynn (4-3) was tagged for seven runs (six earned) in the loss.

After Visalia chipped away and made it a 7-5 game in the seventh, Modesto pulled away against the Rawhide bullpen. Kyle Von Tungeln drew a bases-loaded walk against Seth Simmons to make it 8-5, and Harold Riggins got Modesto to double digits with a 2-run double in the eighth against Kaleb Fleck.

The Rawhide plated a run in the ninth against Russell Brewer, but he stranded two on the bases to shut the door.

With a split guaranteed, the Nuts will now have two chances over the weekend to take the series from Visalia. RHP Tyler Gagnon (5-5, 5.80) will start tomorrow night for Modesto, opposite LHP Cody Wheeler (3-3, 6.10) for the Rawhide. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
