JUPITER, Fla. - Jaylen Nowlin pitched the Mighty Mussels to a 3-0 shutout win over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium Tuesday.
The left-hander Nowlin (4-3) went six innings for the first time in his professional career, needing only 63 pitches while striking out eight.
Fort Myers relievers Jackson Hicks and Niklas Rimmel got the shutout across the finish line, closing out the Mussels' first shutout since June 26. Hicks went two innings and Rimmel earned his second save of the season.
The Mussels' offense received lifts from two infielders making their Low-A debuts - Tanner Schobel and Jorel Ortega.
In the top of the first, Misael Urbina reached on an infield single before Schobel ripped a base hit into left. After a walk loaded the bases, Ortega smoked a base hit into left to put Fort Myers in front 2-0.
The score remained the same until the top of the seventh. With one out, Keoni Cavaco singled to right. After he advanced to second on a walk, Carlos Aguiar dropped an RBI double into the left field corner to extend the lead to 3-0.
