LAST WEEK:
FRI Jan. 21 ACES @ Huntsville (6-1 LOSS) 8:30 p.m. Von Braun Center
[HUNTSVILLE, AL] â With Aces goalie Mark Scally serving a one-game suspension for his fight in Columbus two weeks ago, new goalie Nick Niedert got the start in net. Despite playing a strong game, Niedert could not hold-off the powerful Havoc offense as Huntsville defeated Asheville 6-1 in front of 2,616 fans.
Huntsville capitalized on Asheville penalty troubles with three special teams goals. Two of the six Havoc goals came on the power play and one short-handed. Josh Liebenow had a hat-trick on the night while Jeff Dams, Steve Howard and Doug Merrell had the other Havoc goals. Scoring for Asheville was R.J. Roy.
Havoc goalie Matt Carmichael was solid in net, making some key saves early in the game. He received the win stopping 28 of 29 shots. Niedert got the loss for the Aces despite stopping 36 of 42 shots.
SAT Jan. 21 Winston Salem @ ACES (6-2 LOSS) 7:30 p.m. Asheville Civic Center
[ASHEVILLE, NC] â Scally was back between the pipes on Saturday night at home when the Polar Twins returned to Asheville looking for revenge from last Friday's loss in the Civic Center. Revenge is what they got as they dominated the Aces on their way to a 6-2 win.
Justin Kot opened the scoring for the Polar Twins half-way through the first period and four minutes later, Brent Gardipy made it 2-0. Peter Bournazakis fought his way to the net and beat Polar Twins goalie Jomar Cruz on a deke to bring the Aces back within one with just over two minutes remaining in the first.
The Polar Twins did not let up, however, as Brett Cross scored early on in the second period to put the Aces down 3-1. New Ace, Michael Heindl again brought the Aces to within one, scoring quickly off on offensive zone face-off. But the Aces could not play âcatch-up' for the whole night and the Polar Twins kept coming.
Graham Dearle made it 4-2 to close out the second period scoring. In the third it was all Winston-Salem with Cross and Dearle each adding another goal.
Jomar Cruz got the win stopping 39 of 41 shots and Mark Scally got the loss with 43 saves on 49 shots.
