Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC scored goals either side of halftime courtesy of Irvin Parra and Ethan Vanacore-Decker, then survived a late charge from Colorado Rapids 2 to hold on to win 2-1 to run their preseason record to 2-1-1.

Starting an almost entirely changed lineup from the side that defeated Peak XI 4-1 on Friday night- only midfielder Stefan Lukic made it two-from-two for the weekend- Hailstorm FC started once again in a 3-5-2, with Thomas Olsen in goal; captain Rob Cornwall, Brecc Evans, and a trialist in central defense; lightning-quick Haitians Denso Ulysse and Jerry Desdunes at the wing-back positions; Lukic, Nortei Nortey, and Danny Robles in the heart of the midfield; and Irvin Parra and Westminster native Trevor Amann up top.

Northern Colorado opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Desdunes was brought down in the penalty area while trying to square up to shoot. Parra stepped up to take the penalty, and when the Rapids 2 goalkeeper dove to his right, Parra calmly slotted home in the open far side of the goal to give Hailstorm FC a 1-0 lead.

The lead lasted until the 31st minute, when Colorado Rapids 2 tied it up on a breakaway. An attack down the left flank led to a cross that beat Olsen and found a Rapids 2 player near the far post, who knocked it home.

Ethan Vanacore-Decker came on for Lukic at halftime, and he restored Northern Colorado's lead in the 54th minute when Desdunes stripped the ball from a Rapids 2 defender, sprinted into the penalty area, and then played a perfect through ball to Vanacore-Decker, who slotted home from close range.

Desdunes was shaken up on the play though- he was brought to the ground while making the pass to Vanacore-Decker- and was substituted off for a trialist.

Desdunes came back on again shortly thereafter though, and almost made it 3-1 when he received the ball at the top of the penalty area, drifted past two Rapids 2 defenders with the ball at his feet, and then turned and rifled off a shot towards the low far corner that the goalkeeper barely parried away.

In all, Desdunes gave Colorado Rapids 2 headaches all afternoon with his pace and balance, and proved to be a handful all over the attacking third.

The home team had another attempt at making it 3-1 in the 84th minute with Irvin Parra chipped a ball into the penalty area, and substitute winger Marky Hernández headed the ball goalward. Rapids 2's goalkeeper parried the shot, but sent it in the direction of substitute forward Lachlan McLean, who, off balance and turned parallel to the goal, flicked it with the back of his heel and saw his improvised shot go agonizingly wide of the goal.

With the clock approaching ninety minutes, Rapids 2 camped out in Northern Colorado territory and had a number of attempts to tie the match, but failed to threaten Olsen. Ultimately the clock ran out on their comeback attempt, and Hailstorm held on for a 2-1 win.
