NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, March 21, 2002 – Phillip Simmons, a legendary blacksmith, has been selected by the North Charleston Lowgators to receive the "Heroes Among Us" award for the month of March. Simmons, a Charleston native, will be honored after the first quarter on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum when the Lowgators play the Greenville Groove.

Simmons will be honored for his contributions in wrought iron artwork and humanitarian efforts throughout the Lowcountry. In 1998, Governor David Beasley presented the "Order of the Palmetto" to him. This is the state of South Carolina's highest award. Additionally, he was awarded the "National Heritage Fellowship" in 1982 by the National Endowment for the Arts. This is the most prestigious award presented by the United States to a traditional artist.

The "Heroes Among Us" award is presented to individuals who, through their unique commitment and humanitarian spirit, have made exceptional and lasting contributions to the local community. Award winners are selected based on recommendations from local community leaders, local news stories, and recommendations by the Lowgators' 3-Point Leadership Council.

Dr. Sabra Slaughter, the Chief of Staff to the President of the Medical University of South Carolina, will also be presented with a special award during Saturday night's match up. He is being honored for his efforts to improve the quality and access of health care in South Carolina. Moreover, Dr. Slaughter's diligent efforts to eliminate health care disparities are well recognized throughout the state.

Dr. Slaughter's bibliography includes several publications on topics ranging from community health planning to the continuous improvement strategies in health care education. Previously, he has been awarded the "Earl B. Higgins Diversity Award," presented in 1998.
