Normal CornBelters News Release
Normal, IL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, re-signed right-handed pitchers Mitch Mormann and Ross Davis. They also signed catcher David Remedios. They will play their first regular season home game of the 2013 season at The Corn Crib on Tuesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. versus the Windy City Thunderbolts (CEFCU Opening Night).
Mormann split time with the Abilene Prairie Dogs (North American League - Independent), CornBelters and San Francisco Giants during his first professional season (2012). In 14 innings pitched for the CornBelters, he was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts. He was signed by the Giants late in the season, never assigned and released following spring training this season. He played collegiately at Des Moines Area Community College (Boone, IA), Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) and Wichita State University (Wichita, KS).
"We weren't expecting to get Mitch back after the great spring training he had with the Giants," said CornBelters Field Manager, Brooks Carey. "He's a big, strong and imposing figure on the mound. We welcome him back and hope to help him get another shot with an affiliated team."
During his first professional season (2012), Davis was 1-1, with a 1.00 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched for the CornBelters. Before joining the team, he also appeared in nine games for the Southern Illinois Miners (Frontier League - Independent). He played collegiately at University of Rhode Island (Kingstown, RI) and Lander University (Greenwood, SC).
"In the limited action Ross saw last season, the stats he put up were the kind that get your attention," said Carey. "I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do over a full season, and I expect him to be a big part of our rotation."
Remedios played in 19 games for the Gulf Coast League Yankees (Gulf Coast League - Rookie) last season. The Cuban native hit .292 with 14 hits, 12 RBI, 11 runs scored and five home runs.
"I'm excited to have a player of David's caliber in Normal," said CornBelters Player Personnel Director, Nick Belmonte. "His experience and tools are a welcome edition behind the plate."
THE NIBLET : The CornBelters are currently seeking host families for the 2013 season. The "Host Family Program" provides players with a home away from home. It enables them to live with a family, couple or individual in the Bloomington-Normal area. It is derived from a variety of factors from a player's standpoint. Such factors include: the difficulty in finding a lease for just several months, the possibility of playing for the CornBelters for a limited time and/or the limited salaries that accompany professional baseball at this level of play.
