HERNANDO, Miss. -- The Noah's Gift Teen Committee is gearing up to prepare the community for the upcoming Noah's Gift Memorial 5K Run-Walk-Skate and Challenge Games on Oct. 26.
Schools who enter the race will be entered for the grand prize: a large trophy, bragging rights, and a cash incentive for a school activity of their choice.
Teen Committee members have already created posters and sandwich boards to put up at area schools. This month, they will distribute these items as well as pass out postcards door-to-door around the race route with information about the event, inviting folks to sign up or simply show their support by cheering on the runners and walkers as they pass.
"Our principal, Mr. Uselton, has always said, "ÃËWhen you play one of us, you play all of us,'" Noah's Gift 5K Teen Co-Chair Blake Lowrie said. "This may be perceived as a simple quote, but to me it is filled with the power and pride of being a DeSoto Central Jaguar. When one student has a passion to be successful, in whatever it may be, the student body is always there to back him or her up. I feel like this project will be like any other project we take on at our school."
Points will be assessed based on percentage of attendance per school and scores in the different "Challenge Games" activities.
In addition to running, walking or skating the 5K, the Challenge Games will include a rock climbing wall, the RiverKings "ÃËSlapshot' hockey shooting skills game, and fitness challenge obstacle course set up by trainers from DeSoto Athletic Club.
RiverKings Hockey players and mascot Sheldon the turtle will also make an appearance at the race before competing in their home opener later that night. Vouchers to the game will be included with participants' race registration.
The Noah's Gift 5K benefits the Noah's Gift endowment fund at The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. It was established to inspire and reward deserving young people ages 13-19 with the gift of an extraordinary experience that was of interest to 16-year old Noah Costa at the time of his death.
