No Shutout in Partytown
April 5, 2009 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
It took 59 minutes, 41-and-a-half seconds, but the Waterloo Black Hawks avoided a whitewash in their season finale, with a 4-1 loss against the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders at Young Arena.
Jordan Samuels-Thomas buried a puck in the closing seconds after J.T. Brown had danced to the front of the net. The goal was the 32nd this season for Samuels-Thomas, the most for a Black Hawk since Joe Pavelski scored 36 in 2002-2003. It also prevented the shutout; the Black Hawks have not been blanked at home during the regular season since a 2-0 loss to the Tri City Storm on November 6, 2005.
Matt Donovan scored twice for Cedar Rapids, including the game winner. Jared Rickord, opened the scoring 4:50 into the second period. Ben Lynch added a tally in the third.
Waterloo awaits the winner of Sunday's game between the Des Moines Buccaners and Green Bay Gamblers. If Green Bay wins or loses in overtime, the Hawks will travel there. A Gambler loss in regulation would pit Waterloo against the Rough Riders.
