No Power Outage for Saints' Offense in 7-2 Defeat of RailCats

ST. PAUL, MN - The St. Paul Saints offense was so potent in its 15 hit attack that it knocked out the lights at Midway Stadium. A partial power outage in the bottom of the seventh wasn't enough to keep the Saints from winning 7-2 on Friday night against the Gary SouthShore Railcats in front of 3,027.

With the Saints leading 5-2 and the game heading to the bottom of the seventh a portion of each of the light stanchions and some power at Midway went out. After a 19 minute delay both managers and the umpires elected to play under the conditions. It didn't hurt the Saints who ended up scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Tripp reached on a one out single. He scored on a double from Willie Cabrera to make it 6-2. With two outs Joey Becker singled to left and finished off the scoring.

The Saints got to Railcats starter Dustin Crenshaw in the first. With one out Joe Bonfe doubled to left. Evan Bigley followed that with an RBI double to put the Saints up 1-0. Henry Wrigley would ground out to short, but Bigley broke for third on the play and scored when first baseman Jeremy Hamilton's throw to third went awry giving the Saints a 2-0 lead.

The Railcats would tie the game at two in the fifth when Justin Gominsky led off with a walk. Hamilton doubled him home to make it 2-1. A sacrifice bunt by Zac Mitchell moved Hamilton to third and he scored on a double by Miles Walding tying the game at two.

The Saints regained the lead in the sixth when Willie Cabrera blasted a solo homer to left, his first of the season, giving the Saints a 3-2 lead. Angelo Songco followed with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Becker and that was followed by a walk to Carlos Escobar. With two outs Bonfe doubled both men home to give the Saints a 5-2 lead. Bonfe finished the night 3-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.

All nine Saints collected a hit with Becker, Bonfe, Wrigley Songco and Cabrera all collecting two hits.

The Saints pitching staff did its job with Rob Coe going 6.0 strong innings allowing two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three. Reliever Mikey Mehlich hurled 2.0 innings of hitless relief while walking one and striking out three. Drew Gay pitched a scoreless ninth.

The same two teams meet in game three of the four game series at 7:05 p.m. at Midway Stadium on Saturday. The Saints send RHP Nick Barnese (NR) to the mound against Railcats RHP Stephen Hiscock. It is DARE Night presented by Old Country Buffet.
