Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - The Gary South Shore RailCats got off to a slow start dropping the season opener 6-0 Thursday night at Midway Stadium in St. Paul against the St. Paul Saints. The Saints got all the runs they needed in a five run third and cruised behind solid pitching for Anthony Claggett (1-0) to blank the RailCats.
Morgan Coombs (0-1) got the start for the RailCats and after retiring the first six batters he faced ran into trouble in the third. Angelo Songco ended that streak with a leadoff single to right followed by Joey Becker who doubled off the wall in right. Coombs struck out Dwight Childs but Brandon Wikoff followed with a single to shallow center to score Songco and it was 1-0 Saints. Joe Bonfe then delivered a single to shallow right center to score Becker but a throwing error from right fielder Drew Martinez allowed Wikoff to come home and Bonfe to go to second and it was 3-0 St. Paul.
Coombs looked to right the ship when he got Evan Bigley to ground to short moving Bonfe to third with two outs but the Saints got a two run homer from Henry Wrigley to right to run the score to 5-0. The Saints got another in the 5th on a Willie Cabrera fielders choice to close out the scoring. Combs would be done after five allowing 7H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB and 3SO.
The RailCats managed to get a pair on in the eighth inning with one out singles from Jeremy Hamilton and Zac Mitchell but could not cash in. Gary got a good relief outing from Ethan Gibbons in his pro debut. Gibbons tossed three scoreless innings surrendering just one hit while striking out three. The Saints Claggett went 6.2 holding the RailCats to one hit with a pair of walks and five strike outs.
The two teams will play game two of the four game series Friday night at 7:05pm with RHP Dustin Crenshaw making his first start for Gary while RHP Rob Coe will go for St. Paul. The game can be heard on WEFM 95.9.
