No Bull: Bucks Fall To Brahmas 4-2

February 29, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Laredo Bucks News Release

LAREDO, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Texas Brahmas Friday night 4-2, in front of 3,374 fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center.

The loss snaps the Bucks three game winning streak, and puts them just 1-2-1 in their last four home games. Laredo's lead over Arizona in the Southern Conference stands at 10 points as of press time as they fall to 36-17-3 (75pts).

The Bucks jumped out on top with a four-on-four goal with 6:36 left in the first period. Adam Rivet sent a wrist shot from the right face off dot past Brahmas goaltender David Cacciola. It was Rivet's 17th goal of the season with Jeff Bes (50th)and James Hiebert (25th)picking up assists. The point was Bes' CHL-leading 92nd of the season.

And then came the controversy.

As the teams were heading off the ice to the locker rooms after the first period, referee Paul DePuydt went over to the scorers box to tell the official scorer that Texas (Jordan Cameron) had scored a goal with 58 seconds left in the period. The officials then brought the two teams back onto the ice and put 58 seconds back on the scoreboard, and forced the teams to play the final 58 seconds of the period again. The media was told that the goal judge did not see the puck cross the line, and there was no word why referee DePuydt did not stop the game as soon as he saw the puck cross the goal line for the Brahmas.

The Brahmas (31-20-1, 63pts) outshot the Bucks in the first period 9-4.

Steve Weidlich would be called for a double minor at 11:53 in the second period, which would give the Brahmas a four-minute power-play.

And the Brahmas would cash in.

Texas would take a 2-1 lead at the 12:37 mark of the second period when Blair Manning scored from the right side of the slot past Bucks goaltender John Ceci. It was Manning's ninth goal of the campaign. The Brahmas would take a 3-1 lead on the second part of Weidlich's penalty when Justin Kinnunen took a pass right in front of the Bucks net and sent a shot high past Ceci.

Laredo had some opportunities to score in the final 4:30 minutes of the second period, but could not capitalize.

The Bucks went on two separate five-on-three power-plays, one for 1:21, and the other for 19 seconds, attempting four shots total.

Laredo would outshoot Texas in the middle period 18-5.

The Bucks (20-7-1 at home)would pull to with-in 3-2 at the 6:47 mark of the third period when they took advantage of a full two minute five-on-three power-play. Chris Korchinski was standing at the right side of the crease and deflected a Rivet pass from the left point past Cacciola. It was Korchinski's 21st tally of the year with Rivet and Bes picking up assists. With his two assists Bes CHL-leading point total stands at 93.

Texas would take a 4-2 advantage at the 11:50 mark of the third when Scott Shepard sent the puck from the right end line towards the crease and past Ceci.

Ceci suffered the hard-luck loss in net as he stopped 16 of 20 Texas shots, with Cacciola picking up his second win of the season against the Bucks, setting aside 26 of 28 Laredo attempts.

The Bucks, who outshot the Brahmas 28-20, struggled on the power-play for the second straight night going one-for-nine. Laredo was 0-10 Wednesday, making them 1-19 in their last two games with the man advantage.

With the win the Brahmas moved back into the Northern Conference playoff race.

The Bucks are right back in action Saturday night when they host the Corpus Christi Rayz on TAMIU night. In addition to 16-oz beers being $2.50 until the end of the first period, the first 1,000 fans to enter the LEC will receive a TAMIU/Bucks car flag. There will also be a post game jersey auction. Group tickets start at $10, with individual tickets starting at $12.75. Playoff packages are now available by calling 718-BUCK (2825).
