NLL Concludes Incident Review of Buffalo-Rochester Game on January 3rd

Published on January 8, 2004 under National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release

The National Lacrosse League has concluded its review of the incident which occurred at the conclusion of last Saturday's Rochester Knighthawks-Buffalo Bandits game.

The league reviewed the officials' decision to reset the game clock to one second as well as the decision to disallow Rochester forward Derek Malawsky's goal as time expired. The disallowed goal would have forced the game into overtime. The game ended as a 12-11 victory for the Bandits.

Upon review of the incident, the league has found the video inconclusive with respect to determining whether Derek Malawsky's goal crossed the goal line prior to the expiration of time. The league found the goal was scored within 1/100 of a second from the expiration of the game clock, but the exact moment the ball crossed the line could not be determined.

The video was also inconclusive with respect to whether the game clock was properly reset to one second remaining.

As a result of the incident, the league has issued the following directives to all league officials:

--Within 60 seconds of each quarter, league officials shall closely monitor the game clock operation should any malfunction occur. League officials may consult with the minor officiating crew only to determine any malfunction of the game clock, 30-second clock/horn and the red light goal indicator, period over green light & horn.

--NLL crew chief official shall not overrule another officials' call of a goal scored or goal not counted unless there is clear visual or mechanical evidence that indicates otherwise.

Although the matter was under review, the incident would not serve as grounds for a protest as league rules limit protests on issues relating to player eligibility. Thus, the league's review of the incident could not alter the outcome of the game in any manner.
