HIGH POINT-THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The High Point - Thomasville HiToms have named Nkwa Asonye as the franchise's Director of Broadcasting and Media Relations for the 2014 season, effective immediately.
Asonye will handle the play-by-play duties for all HiToms home and road games and also act as the team's primary media contact handling press releases and roster updates.
"We are delighted to have Nkwa joining us for the 2014 campaign," said HiToms GM, Nick Gaski. "He has an impressive professional background within the broadcasting and journalism realms, in addition to possessing substantial baseball acumen."
Asonye attended the George Washington University, majoring in Journalism and Mass Communication. During his time there, Asonye spent four years working at WRGW District Radio, George Washington's campus radio station. While with WRGW, Asonye broadcasted George Washington University's varsity men's and women's basketball, baseball, and softball games. Notably, in March 2013, Asonye called the first two baseball games ever streamed by the university's athletic multimedia service, RaiseHigh.tv while simulcast by WRGW. One of those games was the Grand Opening of Barcroft Park, the home of George Washington's baseball team.
As sports director, Asonye hosted a weekly show covering the national and regional professional and collegiate sports landscapes. Additionally, he created a separate radio channel to stream conflicting games, reformatted the department's website, and was one of its correspondents and columnists.
Outside of WRGW, Asonye broadcasted the 2013 Atlantic 10 Women's Volleyball Championship Tournament and the I-95 Kickoff Classic, a high school football exhibition, in 2011 and 2012.
"I am beyond excited to be the voice of the HiToms this season," said Asonye. "I consider it an honor to hold this position for such a historic franchise in one of the country's best collegiate baseball leagues."
Asonye, 22, currently works as a Production Assistant at Major League Baseball Advanced Media. His tasks include conducting research and handling content for major and minor league teams. Most recently, Asonye was the on-air correspondent for the 2014 Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Tournament for MLBAM's short-lived internet radio channel.
