Ninth Inning Rally Not Enough for Slammers

Joliet, IL- Coming off of a road sweep of the Lake Erie Crushers the Slammers (36-49) were looking to continue their streak against the Schaumburg Boomers (35-50) on Tuesday but found themselves trailing late.

The Slammers scored first in their half of the third. DH Phil Bates led off with a single to left. SS Alfredo Rodriguez doubled to left putting runners at second and third. LF Jeremy Nowak grounded out to second which allowed Bates to score. The team's RBI leader 3B Mike Garza singled to plate Rodriguez which made it 2-0.

Schaumburg answered right back in the fourth. DH John Menken and 3B TJ Bennett singled. RF Ty Nelson wore a Spencer Medick pitch to load the bases. C Michael Valadez drew a walk to force in the Boomers' first run of the game. 2B Robby Spencer skied a ball that was deep enough to score Bennett to even the game at two.

The Boomers took the lead in the fifth. CF Kyle Ruchim reached with a single. John Menken was plunked to put two on and force the Slammers to go to the pen in Kevin McNorton. 1B Willi Martin hit one deep enough for Ruchim to scamper to third and set up another sacrifice fly by TJ Bennett making it a 3-2 ball game.

The offense continued for Schaumburg in the sixth frame. Michael Valadez singled. Robby Spencer was robbed of extra bases by a diving Mike Garza who got the force out at second. SS Ryan Brockett singled. LF Ken Kirshner homered over the right field wall to push the Boomers' lead to four. Sam Moore came in relief of McNorton, giving up a single but getting out of the inning.

Joliet did their best to rally in the ninth off of Dexter Price. 1B Marc Flores, CF Carter Bell and RF Hunter Ridge all singled to load the bases with no outs. Joe Staley pinch hit but struck out on a full count pitch. Mason Snyder pinch hit for Max Casper and chopped a ball up the middle that Robby Spencer bobbled at second, a run scored while no out was recorded to make it 6-3. Phil Bates lined a ball to third that Bennett trapped and threw to second for the force, Bell scored to make it 6-4. Alfredo Rodriguez lined out to Brockett at short for the final out as the Slammers fell just short despite their late inning efforts.

Brett Mabry got the win (6-3) Spencer Medick was handed the loss (2-2). Our M & M Bank Player of the Game was Alfredo Rodriguez, he went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Hunter Ridge extended his hitting streak to eight games. Mike Garza extended his hitting streak to five games.
