Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short
July 11, 2019 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release
Wilmington, North Carolina-The Wilmington Sharks ended the Morehead City Marlins' shutout bid with a four run ninth inning that fell just short in a 5-4 loss Thursday night at Buck Hardee Field. The loss dropped the Sharks to 2-2 in the second half of play and to 0-9 in the season series with the Marlins.
The rally began when Jonah Beamon led off with a single. Tucker Greer was then hit by the pitch. Cory Everett followed with a single to score Beamon and make it 5-1. Chad Fairey then drove home Greer with a double advancing Everett to third. Both Fairey and Everett scored a play later when Zach Bridges singled cutting it to 5-4. The Marlins pitching staff then set the Sharks down in order to close out the game.
The game began as a pitcher's duel until Dusty Baker singled to lead off the top of the fourth for Morehead City. He then advanced to third when Blaze Glenn reached on a two-base fielding error by Sharks center fielder Tucker Greer. Jack Harris followed with an infield single to score Baker putting the Marlins on the board. Glenn then stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Shepherd to make it 2-0.
Glenn led off the sixth with a double. Harris then hit a two-run home run to left field to put the Marlins up 4-0. The Marlins added another in the seventh when Jace Mercer drew a lead off walk on four pitches. He advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harris putting the Marlins up 5-0.
The Sharks offense struggled to get anything going against Marlins starter Eric Miles. Miles threw six shutout innings and gave up only two hits. He struck out a total of seven including the side in the second inning. After Cam Jenson led off the third inning with a single, Miles went on to retire twelve in a row. The Marlins bullpen ultimately extended that streak to eighteen through the eighth before the Sharks began their rally in the ninth. The Sharks will be back in action Friday night against the Fayetteville SwampDogs at Buck Hardee Field. The game will feature a Post-Game Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Novus Glass. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05PM with the gates opening at 6:00PM.
