Nighthawks close out home season with win over Vision

February 22, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Maryland NightHawks News Release

District Heights, MD. In their regular season home finale, the Nighthawks treated the packed crowd to an impressive 111-106 victory yesterday afternoon at Run 'N Shoot Athletic Center. The victory virtually assures the Nighthawks (15-9) a first round playoff home game.

Big man Kevin Robinson led the way for the Nighthawks with 23 points and 12 rebounds despite falling into early foul trouble. "We had a lot of guys step up at different times while Kevin was out," explained head coach Twiggy Sanders, whose squad had 7 different players score in double figures. Another key factor was turnovers as the Nighthawks committed only 14 turnovers, their lowest amount this season.

The game was pretty tight the whole way with Maryland unable to push the lead to double digitis through three periods. Atlanta was led by the sharp-shooting Leroy Davis who converted 6-10 3 pointers and finished the game with 32 points and 10 rebounds. They also received a yeoman effort from James Richardson who finished with 16 ponts and 13 rebounds and 6 assists. He also logged an impressive 46 minutes of playing time.

The Nighthawks eventually wore down Atlanta in the 4th period as guard Brian Chase put together 6 consecutive points and 2 steals to begin the 4th period. He finished the game with 22 points and 3 steals. The Nighthawks at one point pushed the lead to 16 points with just over 3 minutes left in the game and scored an impressive 36 points in the final period.

Going into the game, the Nighthawks were ranked 6th in the latest ABA Playoff Power rankings which takes into account won/loss record, point differential and strength of schedule among the considerations. The victory likely secures a top 8 spot in the final regular season standings meaning that their first playoff game will be played at home. The Nighthawks plkay their final regular season game on the road against the same Atlanta Vision squad this Friday night, Feb 25th at 7PM.
