HL Teams Select 13 of the CHL's Best in Opening Round of Draft - Selection Process Resumes Saturday

(Saginaw, MI) The Canadian Hockey League continued to showcase why it is the primary developmental league to the National Hockey League Friday night, with 16 of their own being selected within the first thirty picks of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The CHL's success at the draft mirrors the successes of past seasons, the most recent being the 2008 event which saw 20 active CHL'ers being selected.

The Ontario Hockey League boasted seven of those 16 picks, including two of the first three. The New York Islanders picked John Tavares (London) first overall while the Colorado Avalanche selected Matt Duchene (Brampton) third overall.

Other OHL'ers included the London Knights' Nazem Kadri (Toronto Maple Leafs, seventh overall), the Windsor Spitfires' Ryan Ellis (Nashville Predators, eleventh overall), the Oshawa Generals' Calvin deHann (New York Islanders, twelfth overall), the Peterborough Petes' Zack Kassian (Buffalo Sabres, thirteenth overall) and the Guelph Storm's Peter Holland (Anaheim Ducks, fifteenth overall).

The 2009 NHL Entry Draft resumes with the second round Saturday at 10:00 AM, with the seven round event ending later that night.
