Newswest 9 Anchor Jay Hendricks to Suit up Friday
June 30, 2005 - National Indoor Football League (NIFL)
West Texas Roughnecks News Release
ODESSA, TX. In a game being played for glory, Roughnecks head coach Chris Williams had to dig deep to build a roster that would assure an Odessa victory against Lubbock on Friday. He began by reviewing area college recent graduates, than looked for local high school football stars, then it was pop warner football, old age homes and even the streets of downtown Odessa.
The Roughnecks are pleased to announce that all of that hard work paid off and intend to demonstrate so as local icon, Newswest 9 main anchor Jay Hendricks will be suiting up for the big game tomorrow night. In his professional football debut, the 5' 10", 195 lbs. athlete really wants to make an impression, "The good people of the Permian Basin will get to see the real me for the first time. I was born to play professional sports. I would have been playing all season if it didn't conflict with my other job!" , explained Hendricks.
Equally enthusiastic about this signing is coach Williams who stated, "How does Benizio expect me to do my job when he makes me put up with #?*#@! publicity stunts like this?..." Well...we are all confident that he will grow to like Hendricks being a part of his team. While his position is still to be determined, Hendricks can be very dangerous on both sides of the ball and fans can expect to see him in real action all over the field.
On A Serious Note: Jay Hendricks is dedicating his debut to the area MDA charities. He and the Roughnecks will be asking fans to make a donation for this special cause at the game tomorrow night. The Muscular Dystrophy Association does a list of remarkable things throughout our community and beyond has team up with Newswest 9 once again this year for the Labor Day Weekend Telethon. The MDA is morning the loss of active participant Sean McKinnis who also supported the local firefighters. In his memory donations will be collected by members of the Odessa Fire Department.
