Visalia Rawhide News Release

VISALIA - The Rawhide fell behind, but their confidence at home could not be shaken, as the Rawhide defeated the High Desert Mavericks 9-4 on Wednesday night at Rawhide Ballpark thanks to some stellar pitching and some giant cracks of the bat.

In his first start with the Rawhide, Kyle Schepel(1-0) was nothing short of impressive, tossing 6.0 innings of two-run ball on just three hits, striking out three and walking just one. Schepel was added to the roster from Low-A South Bend on May 4th.

For the seventh game in a row, it was the opposition who would get on the scoreboard first. Schepel gave up an RBI-double to Ji-Man Choi with nobody out and two batters later, Kevin Rivers drove in Choi on an RBI-single to give High Desert a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th inning.

But the Rawhide would respond in the bottom of the frame, as they usually have this season, with a two-out rally. Tom Belza flared a single into left field with two away off Mavericks starter Jordan Pries (2-2). Sean Jamieson then followed it up with a double to deep left-center to plate Belza and cut the deficit in half. Matt Helm then grounded to short, but reached on the errant throw from Chris Taylor, allowing Jamieson to score and tie the game at 2-2.

Ryan Court led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a solo homerun to right, giving the Rawhide a 3-2 lead. Court was called up from Low-A South Bend on May 7th, making Wednesday night his first game in a Rawhide uniform.

Three batters later, Jamieson lined a single right back at the pitcher witch careemed off Pries, and his throw to first was way overthrown, allowing Tom Belza to score from 1st. The error wouldn't really matter, though, as Matt Helm hammered a shot to center for a two-run homerun, extending the lead to 6-2 and ending the night for Pries.

Michael Perez busted out of his minislump with a three-run home run that landed in the visitor's bullpen, padding the Rawhide 9-2. Perez' five home runs on the season lead the team, even though he has only been on the roster since April 13th.

The Rawhide bullpen provided 4.0 innings of mop-up work, as Visalia cruised to their 14th home victory in a row. The team has not lost at home since April 7th against San Jose. The Rawhide look to keep the streak alive on Thursday in a double-header to finish this brief series against the High Desert Mavericks. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 pm.
