New York Red Bulls Capture Third Supporters' Shield
October 28, 2018 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK - The New York Red Bulls leapt past Atlanta United on MLS Decision Day presented by AT&T to capture their third Supporters' Shield following a 1-0 victory against Orlando City SC on Sunday at Red Bull Arena. Led by Homegrown Player Derrick Etienne Jr.'s strong cutback effort to put NYRB up 1-0 early in the second half, the Red Bulls became only the second club in MLS history to come from behind on the season's final game to win the Shield (the other was the 2001 Miami Fusion over the Chicago Fire). The Red Bulls also won the Supporters' Shield in 2013 and 2015.
The Red Bulls cap the regular season with a 22-7-5 record (71 points), which breaks the MLS points record set by Toronto FC in 2017 (20-5-9, 69 points) and matched by Atlanta in 2018 (21-7-6, 69 points). As the Supporters' Shield winner, NYRB has the top seed throughout the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs and would host MLS Cup if the club advances to that stage.
In the Western Conference, Sporting Kansas City's Roger Espinoza unleashed a 25-yard, left-footed strike (GOAL) and Daniel Salloi netted a clinical 72nd-minute winner (GOAL) to spark Sporting to a 2-1 victory against the Los Angeles Football Club to finish atop the West.
