New York Power Set to Open 2003 Training Camp

New York, NY - The New York Power, of the Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) will open their 2003 training camp on Monday, March 3, at the U.S.. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) in Kings Point, NY. The Power will play five exhibition matches leading up to the start of the 2003 season.

New York will open their preseason schedule on March 12, playing St. John's University in the newly built Belson Stadium on the campus of St. John's University at 7:00 pm. Three days later, they will travel to New Haven, CT to play the Boston Breakers in a match slated to kickoff at 6:00 pm. The team will return to St. John's University on March 22 to play the Under-19 U.S. Women's National Team at noon.

March 26 will be a special day for the Power's newly drafted forward Christie Welsh, as she will go up against her former college teammates at Penn State University. Welsh, the 2001 Hermann Trophy winner, was the first player in women's soccer history to earn NSCAA All-America honors for four-consecutive years at Penn State. Game time is slated for 11:00 a.m. at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

Like last season, the Power will end their preseason by hosting the Philadelphia Charge at Indian Hills HS in Oakland, NJ on March 30 at 5:00 pm. The Power defeated the Charge last year, 2-1. New York will utilize two different training facilities, the USMMA, from March until June, and Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, NY, the Power's home field, from June 1 until the season is over. All practice times are scheduled for 10:00 am - noon, but are subject to change.

During the duration of training camp, 25 women will battle for 16 spots on the Power roster as the team prepares for its opening game on April 5 in Atlanta, GA versus the Beat. In addition to their training, the team will participate in the Long Island Junior Soccer League Convention on March 1 & 2 at the Huntington Hilton in Melville, NY.
