San Jose CyberRays News Release
SAN JOSE (Feb. 28, 2003) â The San Jose CyberRays will open training camp Saturday for the 2003 WUSA season with 25 players in camp.
The five-week camp at Saratoga's West Valley College will include a scrimmage against the Cal women's team on March 8, which is free to the public, and a March 22 exhibition match against the Boston Breakers as part of the Las Vegas College Showcase, an annual event staged by the UNLV Women's Sports Foundation.
The training camp roster includes 16 players whose contract options were exercised last week, the team's two picks in the 2003 WUSA Draft, plus additional invited players including three from an invitation-only tryout camp Feb. 15-16.
Among the CyberRays' tryout players is a member of the original team in 2001, midfielder Ann Cook, who was traded to the Washington Freedom before the 2002 season for defender Michelle French. Cook, whose option was not exercised by Washington, has the distinction of playing in both WUSA championship games, for the winning CyberRays in 2001 and last season with the runner-up Freedom.
The CyberRays open their 2003 season at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5 against the Philadelphia Charge in Spartan Stadium. Season tickets are on sale now at CyberRays Tower, 1991 Park Ave., in San Jose or online at http://www..sjcyberrays.com/tickets/tix_seasontix.html.
