Four Beat Stars to Represent Their Nations at 10th Algarve Cup

ATLANTA (February 28, 2003) - Atlanta Beat forward Cindy Parlow and goalkeeper Briana Scurry were named to the U.S. Women's National Team, while forward Charmaine Hooper and defender Sharolta Nonen were named to the Canadian National Team for the 10th Algarve Cup, the most prestigious invitational women's tournament in the world. The tournament is being held from March 14-20, 2003, in 12 venues on the southern coast of Portugal.

The U.S. and Canada were drawn into Group A and will face each other in each team's opening match on Friday, March 14. Reigning Olympic Champion Norway and European runner-up Sweden round out Group A. Group B features China, Denmark, France and England, while Group C rounds out the teams and includes Portugal, Ireland, Wales and Greece.

Parlow heads into the tournament having recorded 120 appearances for the U.S. Women and scoring 57 goals. Her last appearance was in a 1-0 win over Iceland on February 16, 2003. Scurry has become the regular starting goalkeeper for the U.S. Women and heads into the tournament having appeared in 113 matches. She last appeared for the U.S. Women in a 1-0 win over Germany in the Four Nations Tournament in January 2003.

Hooper has appeared in 90 matches for the Canadian Women's National Team and is the all-time leading scorer, having notched 56 goals. Her last appearance for the Canadian Women was versus the U.S. in the 2002 Gold Cup final. Nonen is the anchor of the Canadian defense and has recorded 37 appearances for Canada. Her last appearance was also in the 2002 Gold Cup final versus the U.S.
