The Coaches
Mike Neu: Mike Neu is the first head coach of the New Orleans VooDoo. Neu is a six-year Arena Football coaching veteran, coming to the New Orleans after serving as head coach of the Carolina Cobras in 2002. Neu has gotten his team off to a 9-2 start in their inaugural season, marking one of the most successful seasons for a first-year Arena Football League Franchise.
In 2002, Neu guided the Cobras to a 5-2 record on the road and their second-straight postseason berth. Carolina also posted the first playoff victory in club history (a 72-64 win at Grand Rapids) in 2002 as the club featured the AFL's fourthranked defense.
As offensive coordinator with the Cobras in 2001, before being promoted to head coach prior to the team's first round playoff game, the Cobras averaged over 56 points a game (fifth in the league) and finished 7-7 (improving from a 3-13 record the year before).
Prior to coming to Carolina, Neu served as head coach and director of football operations for the Augusta Stallions of af2 in 2000. In his only season, Neu led Augusta to a 14-4 record, the American Conference title and was named the league's Coach of the Year. Augusta finished in the top four in every major offensive and defensive category.
Neu began his coaching career in 1994 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Ball State. His professional playing career started with a stint with the Canadian Football League's Calgary Stampeders in 1995 before joining the Arena Football League's Orlando Predators in 1996 and moving on to the Nashville Kats in 1997.
Neu started his Arena Football League coaching career with the Nashville Kats in 1998, when he served as quarterbacks coach for the Kats and handled all play-calling responsibilities for the offense. The next year he was promoted to offensive coordinator and the Kats made their third consecutive playoff appearance. The team also set franchise highs in six offensive categories, including scoring and total offense.
Neu played four seasons at Ball State, where he was named the MAC Most Valuable Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year as a senior in 1993. A four-year starter, Neu guided Ball State to the conference championship his final year and holds school career passing records in passing yardage, passing attempts, completions and touchdown passes.
Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen and a son, Carson.
Skip Foster: One of the most successful head coaches in the AFL, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet enters his sixth campaign leading the SaberCats in 2004.
Last season, he guided the SaberCats to a league-high tying 12 victories, their fourth straight double-digit win season - the longest current streak in league history - and captured its fourth consecutive Western Division title and fifth overall. Along the way, Arbet earned his 50th career victory with a 71-49 win at chicago on March 9 and achieved his 50th regular season victory with a 65-49 defeated of Colorado on April 27.
Became the the eighth coach in league history to win 50 career games and the second fastest to reach the mile - stone. San Jose also earned the top playoff seed in 2003 for a second straight season and the third time in four years.
With a regular season winning percentage of .736 (53-19), Arbet ranks second in league history among coaches with at least 20 victories and his 59 career wins place him eighth in AFL annals.
In 2002 Arbet was named Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons after leading the SaberCats to their league championship by posting a record 13 regular season wins. San Jose started the season by winning its first 12 contests, also a league mark and capped its record setting run with the largest victory in ArenaBowl history, running off 45 unanswered points in a 52-14 win over the Arizona Rattlers on August 18, 2002.
Arbet earned his first Coach of the Year award after leading his squad to a 12-win season in 2000 and the first postseason victory in team history. The SaberCats established a league record by winning their final 11 regular season games and topped Oklahoma 63-40 for their first ever playoff win.
A four-year letterwinner at Sacramento State, Arbet played defensive end for the Hornets between 1981 and 1985, and graduated with a Bachelors degree in Criminal Justice in 1985. He was also a member of the school's track team where he competed in the decathlon, discus and shot put.

John Fitzgerald's seventh touchdown pass of the game with 19 seconds remaining lifted the New Orleans VooDoo to a 63-59 victory over the Austin Wranglers in the Erwin Center.
The 14-yard TD pass to WR/DB Calvin Spears capped a comeback from 11 points down for the VooDoo (9-2) with four minutes to play. New Orleans, with the victory, kept pace with the San Jose SaberCats for the best record in the AFL as the two clubs play next Saturday in San Jose. The Wranglers dropped to 6-5 overall.
The Wranglers led, 59-48 after a eight-yard TD pass by QB John Kaleo to WR/DB Charlie Davidson. In the hurry-up offense, the VooDoo pulled to 59-54 on a seven-yard scoring pass from Fitzgerald to OS Ira Gooch with 57 seconds to play. New Orleans went for two points and Fitzgerald rolled out for the conversion to cut the margin to 59-56.
The VooDoo lined up for an onside kick. K Brian Schmitz popped the ball into the air, where DS Monty Montgomery out-jumped a Wranglers defender to recover at the VooDoo 16. On third-and-two at the New Orleans 24, Fitzgerald threw a 12-yard strike to OS Aaron Bailey for a first down at the Austin 14 with 24.3 seconds left.

What a Start
Sparked by a 9-2 start, the VooDoo has enjoyed the most impressive 11-game start by an AFL first-year team. The New Jersey Red Dogs began their first season with an 8-2 start in 1997, but fell to 9-5 by the end of the season, missing the playoffs. The VooDoo can continue to exceed this pace with a win in San Jose this Saturday.
Tops at Home
Another contributing factor for the VooDoo's 9-2 start is their undefeated 5-0 mark at the New Orleans Arena. New Orleans along with fellow division leader, the San Jose SaberCats (5-0) are the only two teams in the Arena Football league to have an unbeaten mark at home and are tied for the best overall mark in the league.
What a Crowd
Through their first four home games, the VooDoo have attracted an average of 15,155 fans per game to the New Orleans Arena. New Orleans' average crowd is ranked fourth in the AFL, leads attendance figures for teams in the Southern division and is above the league's average of 12, 155. The VooDoo enjoyed their first sellout on Saturday, March 27 when they attracted 16,245 fans for their contest with the Carolina Cobras, with over 1200 fans being turned away. Below are the top ten season attendance figures.
Team Average Attendance
1. Philadelphia Soul 17,261
2. Columbus Destroyers 16,619
3. Colorado Crush 15,357
4. New Orleans VooDoo 15,155
5. Chicago Rush 14,202
6. Tampa Bay Storm 14,127
7. Orlando Predators 12,971
8. San Jose SaberCats 12,947
9. Arizona Rattlers 12,797
10. Los Angeles Avengers 12,261
What a Rush
VooDoo FB/LB Dan Curran has emerged as one of the top two-way players in the game. Curran is the leading rusher in the AFL with 56 carries for 246 yards and 16 rushing TDs, pacing the VooDoo rushing offense, which is ranked third in the league. Curran has already set career-highs in all major offensive categories. The University of New Hampshire product is tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns with 16. The AFL record for rushing yards in a season by a running back is 392 by Bernard Hall of the St. Louis Stampede.
Getting Defensive
A major reason for the VooDoo's 9-2 start is the team's ability to keep the opposition out of the end zone. Through nine games, New Orleans has surrendered an average of only 44.4 points per game, putting them in third place in the AFL in scoring defense. In the nine games the week before playing New Orleans (not counting the opener at Philadelphia), VooDoo opponents had averaged 53.8 points on offense and were held to an average of 45.4 points by the VooDoo defense, a difference of -8.4 points.
Impact Player
OS Aaron Bailey has made an immediate impact on the VooDoo offense. Bailey, a four-year AFL veteran who came to New Orleans from San Jose after spending his first two seasons playing under Mike Neu in Carolina, is among the AFL's leading receivers. Through 11 games, Bailey has 65 receptions for 975 yards with 24 TDs. Bailey is currently tied for fifth in the AFL in scoring among nonkickers (156), 15th in receptions, ranked eighth in receiving yards, 15th in kickoff return average (19.5), tied for fifth in kickoff return TDs (2), seventh in first downs (57) and ninth in third down receptions (13). Bailey is on pace to surpass his finest Arena Football League season, when he caught 89 balls for 1,102 yards and 18 TDs under Neu with the Carolina Cobras in 2002. He has already set a career-high with 24 touchdown receptions. A five-year NFL veteran, Bailey played for the Indianapolis from 1994-98 and is the Colts' career leader with 3,501 kickoff return yards and is tied for the team's all-time lead with two touchdown returns.
Coming Through in the Clutch
VooDoo QB John Fitzgerald has been a steadying presence to the offense, completing 180-of-320 passes for 2289 yards, with 43 TD passes and seven interceptions. The fourth-year veteran has already set a career-high in passing yardage, and has played best when it has counted most with a 110.6 fourth quarter passer rating. In the final quarter in 2004, Fitzgerald has completed 40-of-75 passes for 557 yards with 14 TD passes and one interception.
Fitzgerald's play earned him Player of the Week honors for Week 12, as selected by the board of the Arena Football League Writers Association (AFLWA).
He threw seven TD passes, including a 14-yarder to WR/DB Calvin Spears with 19 seconds left, to lift the VooDoo to a 63-59 win over the Austin Wranglers. New Orleans trailed by 11 points with about 4 minutes left.

Coach Neu Says
Excerpts from VooDoo coach Mike Neu's postgame comments about the team's win over the Austin Wranglers on Sunday and next Saturday's game at the San Jose SaberCats
(on this week's finish at Austin) "That's Arena Ball. I'm telling you it's unbelievable with this league. Just when you think you've seen it all, something else unfolds, so it's a week to week battle. Anything that can pop up seems to pop up."
(on the locker room atmosphere after the victory) "It was awesome. Those guys, I think even though there was a gratifying feeling in everybody's gut, it's good to hear those guys say, "We're just getting started here." It's good to hear that."
(on the playmaking abilities of defensive specialist Monty Montgomery) "There's nobody that's playing anymore consistently than Monty Montgomery right now. He comes to play every week. He fights and competes and battles for four quarters. He did a heck of a job yesterday. Tacoma Fontaine, who's really been talked about a lot as being one of the up and coming receivers in this league as an offensive specialist, the guy has four catches for 51 yards and Monty played a physical game with him and that was something that that kid hadn't seen that year. Monty comes up and catches him at the line of scrimmage and really confused him and took him out of his game if you will."
(on the kicking of kicker Brian Schmitz in the game) "He was unbelievable. Both of those onside kicks were great. We recovered the one at the end that we needed to recover. We had an opportunity to recover the other one at the end of the first half. His kickoffs were great. He did a great job all day long. It's great to see. He missed the one extra point and he was frustrated. He came back and he delivered some clutch kicks for us."
(on Monty Montgomery's game-saving interception at the end of regulation to seal the win for the VooDoo) "Monty went up and got it. Tom Briggs is a great player in this league and the lineman of the year in this league, but when you have an opportunity to get Monty off Tom, he just out jumped him."
(on the health of the team after Sunday's game)"We're still waiting to hear about a few guys right now. As the week unfolds, we'll find out about that. These guys are warriors. Some played through a lot of pain. Chris (Pointer) was hurt really with his groin yesterday. He sucked up and played. It's going to be a week where practicewise, where some guys miss some practice, but I won't be surprised to see them play in this game on Friday night."
(on if he knew from the start that this game against Austin was going to be a war) "Yes, with Austin after watching them on tape, I admire their style of play. They play hard. I like watching them on tape and I told their coach Skip Foster that his guys play hard and I like watching them. Up front, it was very similar teams. A lot of athletic guys that are pass rushers. If they get cut, they do a good job of getting back up and playing off of the cut blocks, so it was an intense battle all day long. I thought both teams got after each other pretty good, very similar styles. I think our guys were chomping at the bit. Anytime you get to go against a lineman of the year in the Arena League in Tom Briggs...He received that award last year, it always turns up a little bit."
(on if he is proud of how the VooDoo responded after the setback off of the net) "They (Austin) got that ball off of the net yesterday and we went down 11 points and that's tough to overcome. You give our guys credit. We find a way and I think that was traveling around our bench area. We'll get it done. We'll find a way. Just keep believing, keep your head up. I give credit to our guys up front for continuing to believe, a big goal line stand before the half, going into halftime down seven as opposed to going in down 14, that's a huge play in that game."
(on the health of FB/LB Dan Curran) "He's okay. He's as tough as they come. He got banged up a little bit, but Dan will be fine."
(on the play of Jacques Rumph) "He did a nice job. He stepped in and got himself a nice opportunity. He worked hard all year long on the practice squad. It was nice to see him make some plays and deservedly so, because he's kept a positive attitude all year long. When you don't get a chance to play and you're making practice squad pay, it can be tough and he kept a positive attitude all year."
(on if he is surprised at Rumph's play) "No, because he practices very well every week and it's just a matter of time for him."
(on if Rumph will be a regular member of the rotation) "It just depends. It's going to be a week to week thing with him."
(on while this game will determine a lot, is it also true that the team cannot count on everything for this San Jose game) "Yes, we're excited to face year in and year out, one of the best teams in the league in San Jose. They're always good every year. They always have one of the top records in the league. We're looking forward to see where we stack up against one of the powerhouses in the league in San Jose. San Jose's good. They're very basic offensively, but they perfect what they do. They have very good receivers across the board. They got great linemen. They got a good quarterback. They don't lack anything. They got a great coach in Darren Arbet, who's done a heck of a job with that program, so we're looking forward to it. We're going to San Jose on their turf. I know our guys are excited about it and that's what we were talking about in the locker room after the game."
