Pensacola Pelicans News Release

The Pensacola Pelicans along with the Community Maritime Park Associates (CMPA) are pleased to announce the ceremonial ground breaking of the Vince Whibb's Sr. Community Maritime Park on Thursday, September 17, 2009. A project that has been four years in the making is coming to fruition.

Having been voted on a passed in the 2006 general election by the Pensacola citizens, the park will be a catalyst for renovation and progress for the entire Pensacola area.

The 30 acre $70 million Park features three main components: the Vice Admiral John H. Fetterman Maritime Museum, University of West Florida classrooms and conference center, and a 3,500 seat multi-use stadium. On the south side of the property is planned a great open lawn space complete with access to the water and a band shell.

A few highlighted benefits of the park are that it will open up waterfront access to all, create many good paying jobs, further education, generate new income for the city, increase tourism, and improve the quality of life.

Pensacola's Mayor Mike Wiggins and Pelicans owner Quint Studer will lead the ceremony which begins at 5:15 p.m. at the park site located on Escambia Bay in downtown Pensacola. The entire community is invited to attend and join in the celebration.

This event also allows citizens another opportunity to voice their ideas and thoughts on uses for the park and open space. CMPA representatives will be accepting resumes and answering questions regarding employment opportunities at the Community Maritime Park.

Construction of the park development will begin promptly on Friday, September 18.

The Pelicans are currently tied with the Lincoln Saltdogs in the American Association Championship Series at 1-1 in a best-of-five series. Game three is tonight at Pelican Park (Pensacola, FL) at 7:05 p.m.
