New Jersey Cardinals News Release
With the Major League Baseball Meetings recently completed in Anaheim, California, four recent transactions on the Major League level involved four former New Jersey Cardinals players.
On December 18, 2004, the St. Louis Cardinals acquired left handed pitcher and 17 game winner Mark Mulder from the Oakland Athletics. The Cardinals traded the As right handed pitchers Dan Haren, Kiko Calero, and catcher Daric Barton. Haren played for the New Jersey Cardinals in 2001 and posted a 3-3 record with a 3.10 ERA and 1 save. Harens first professional win came on 7/25/01 at Williamsport against the Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates). This past season in St. Louis, Dan went 3-3 with a 4.50 ERA and appeared in 5 post season games going 1-0 with a 2.16 ERA.
In the AAA Phase of the 2004 Rule 5 Draft, teams can select unprotected players off another clubs roster. With the 21st pick the Boston Red Sox selected infielder Tony Granadillo. In 2004, Granadillo appeared in 14 games for the New Jersey Cardinals and hit .235. With the 50th pick in this phase, the Florida Marlins selected right handed pitcher Josh Teekel. A two year veteran of the New Jersey Cardinals, Teekel posted a career mark of 5-4 with 3 saves and a 2.79 ERA over the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Josh fanned 97 batters in 109.2 innings of work in New Jersey.
In the AA Phase of the 2004 Rule 5 Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies selected pitcher Jared Blasdell off the Chicago Cubs roster. Blasdell a member of the 2001 New Jersey Cardinals, was dealt from St. Louis to the Chicago Cubs along with Jason Karnuth (NJC-97) for pitcher Jeff Fassero on 9/24/02. Blasdell was 0-1 with 11 saves and a 1.26 ERA for New Jersey in 01.
