Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa-Defenseman Brandon Montour and forward Peter Krieger will skate as Waterloo Black Hawks for the first time this weekend during the preseason USHL Atlantic Challenge. Wednesday, the Hawks announced that both 19-year-olds have recently committed to NCAA Division I universities.
After completing his time in the USHL, Montour will make his way to New England in order to join the University of Massachusetts program, while Krieger's compass will point the opposite direction, leading him to the University of Alaska.
"Making a college commitment is a milestone," said Waterloo Head Coach P.K. O'Handley. "For Brandon and Peter, we want the coming season with the Black Hawks to be one they can use to develop their games so that they can make an impact right away in Amherst and Fairbanks."
Each player comes to Waterloo with previous junior hockey experience. Appearing with the Caledonia Corvairs of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2012/13, Montour scored 18 goals from the blue line and accumulated 49 assists. The Oshwegen, Ontario, native's 67 total points were second on the Corvairs' stat sheet and ranked second in the league among defensemen.
Krieger paced the Aberdeen Wings of the North American Hockey League with 54 points from 22 goals and 32 assists. Originally from Plymouth, Minnesota, Krieger also dressed for 59 of the Wings' 60 games last winter.
Eleven members of the Hawks' squad traveling to New Jersey for the USHL Atlantic Challenge have now made college commitments. In 2012/13, former Black Hawk Eddie Olczyk completed his college career with the Minutemen. The last player with Waterloo ties to appear for the Nanooks was Joe Sova in 2010/11.
