December 3, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (December 3rd) - The Central Hockey League announced Tuesday that Thunder goaltender Taylor Nelson has been selected as the Oakley CHL Goaltender of the Week for the period ending on December 1st. This is the first league honor earned by a Thunder player this season.
The second-year netminder out of Ferris State University played a big part in helping the Thunder to a four-point week. On Wednesday, Nelson stopped 25 of 27 shots in a 3-2 victory over the Brampton Beast to help secure the team's first home win of the season. He followed up that performance on Saturday with a road win against the Missouri Mavericks by the final of 3-2 in a shootout. He stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced and also denied four out of the five shooters in the shootout for his fourth win of the season. During the week, he finished with a goals against average of 1.92, save percentage of .927 and gave up just four goals in two games. He saw his goals against average overall drop to 3.07 and save percentage to .901. Nelson has figured in each of the Thunder's four wins this season.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound native of Regina, Saskatchewan led the Bulldogs to the CCHA title in 2011-12 and a berth in the Frozen Four. That same season, he was selected to the All-CCHA First Team, going 21-7-3 and recording career-bests in goals-against average (2.10) and save percentage (.924), which set the Ferris State record. He started his pro career with the San Francisco Bulls of the ECHL.
Wichita is in the middle of three-straight games against the Missouri Mavericks and will host its heated-rival on Thursday, December 5th at 7:05 p.m. The Thunder travel to Missouri on Friday night before returning home Saturday to close out a three-in-three against the Tulsa Oilers at 7:05 p.m.
Saturday Night is Teddy Bear Toss Night, presented by Bank of the West and the Law Office of Slape and Howard. Bring a new teddy bear to the game and when the Thunder score its first goal, fans are encouraged to the throw the bears on the ice. The teddy bears will delivered around the area to local charities and underprivileged children by the Thunder players to help ensure everyone has a present for the holiday season.
Individual game tickets are on sale now. Season tickets and mini plans are still available. Don't delay, contact the Wichita Thunder Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at (316) 264-4625. Stay up-to-date on all the news this off-season by visiting www.wichitathunder.com .
