END REGULAR SEASON
Cape Breton Highlanders
Head Coach: Bernardo Fitz-Gonzalez Home arena: Centre 200
Highlandersbasketball.ca
Two losses by the Cape Breton Highlanders this week could cause the Sydney crew to lose their hold on the third seed in the Maritimes playoff bracket. In the two losses to the Halifax Hurricanes, Jamal Reynolds and Chris Johnson notched 20.5 and 20.0 ppg, respectively, while Devin Sweetney scored 23 in the Highlanders' first game this week.
Halifax Hurricanes
Coach: Mike Leslie Home arena: Scotiabank Centre
halifaxhurricanes.ca
The Hurricanes are finishing strong in the NBL's home stretch, as they won all four games this week and cemented their grip on the #2 seed in the Maritimes playoff bracket. The four wins included a monstrous 144-78 victory over Windsor in which the Hurricanes set a new league record for margin of victory with 66 points. Terry Thomas was the top scorer for Halifax with 21.8 ppg, while Meshack Lufile pulled down 9.5 rebounds in two contests.
Island Storm
Head Coach: Tim Kendrick Home Venue: Eastlink Centre
stormbasketball.ca
Although the Island Storm have been eliminated from the postseason for the first time since the 2011-12 season, the team is still in the fight on every single game. Robbie Robinson had the top scoring average for the Charlottetown crew, notching 22.7 ppg. Guillaume Boucard almost had a double-double averae of 22.0 ppg and 9.3 rebounds per game.
KW Titans
Head Coach: Cavell Johnson Home arena: Kitchener Memorial Auditorium
kwtitans.com
Just when it seemed that the Titans might miss the playoffs, the Kitchener-Waterloo crew took a much-needed 125-121 victory over Windsor to keep their postseason activities alive. Ashton Smith averaged 20.0 ppg in the two games this week, while Akeem Ellis shined with 19.0 ppg. Justin Strings was the leading rebounder for the Titans, with 8.5 rpg.
London Lightning
Head Coach: Elliott Ethington Home arena: Budweiser Gardens
lightningbasketball.ca
While the Lightning is guaranteed of a playoff position for the eighth consecutive year, the team is still unsure of its seeding, and a 116-108 loss to the Sudbury Five this week didn't help their issue. In the loss, Maurice Bolden and Marvin Phillips scored 19 points apiece, with AJ Gaines pulling 13 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.
Moncton Magic
Head Coach: Joe Salerno Home arena: Centre Avenir
monctonmagic.ca
The Magic finished their season with a franchise-best 27-13 and, for the first time, they brought their home city the #1 seed in the NBL playoffs and, with that, home court advantage throughout the postseason. The Magic took three of four wins this week, thanks to Trey Kell's activities (25.3 ppg, 8.3 rpg), along with 19.3 ppg from Billy White.
Saint John Riptide
Head Coach: Nelson Terroba Home Venue: Harbour Station
sjriptide.ca
The Riptide punched their ticket to the postseason with a close 84-83 win over the Island Storm. Bryce Washington powered the Port City crew with 24 points and 21 rebounds in the victory, while TJ Maston and Marvin Binney scored 19 points apiece.
St. John's Edge
Head Coach: Doug Plumb Home Arena: Mile One Stadium
sjedge.ca
The St. John's Edge finished their sophomore season in the NBL with a 21-19 record, complete with a two-game split against the Island Storm. Murphy Burnatkowski proved to be a great late-season addition for the Edge, scoring 24.0 ppg this week. Shaquille Keith had a double-double average this week, with 19.5 ppg and 11.5 rpg.
Sudbury Five
Head Coach: Logan Stutz Home Arena: Sudbury Community Arena
thefive.ca
The Sudbury Five will make the playoffs in their freshman season; whether they finish as the #1, #2 or #3 seed in the Ontario / Newfoundland and Labrador division, only time will tell. The Five won two games this week, with help from Braylon Rayson (31.5 ppg) and Maurice Jones (24.0 ppg).
Windsor Express
Head Coach: Bill Jones Home Venue: WFCU Centre
windsorexpess.ca
Last week, the Windsor Express were 17-17 and had a good shot to make the postseason for the seventh consecutive year. But a four-game losing streak this week - plus suspensions to Chris Jones and to DeAndre Thomas - put the Express at 17-21 and dangerously close to falling out of April ball. In playing all four games this week, Juan Pattillo led the Express with 18.5 ppg, while Ty Walker averaged 8.0 rebounds.
Game reports compiled via team press releases, and from articles appearing in newspapers from the teams' home locations.
