NBC Sports' Eli Gold Touts Gladiators' Offseason Moves
December 15, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Las Vegas Gladiators News Release
Las Vegas, NV, December 15, 2003 â In his most recent column on Arenafootball.com, Eli Gold of NBC Sports hailed the Las Vegas Gladiators as the team in the Arena Football League that has done the most to improve itself this off-season.
"I know that many teams in the AFL are rightfully proud of their off-season acquisitions, but no one has done more to improve themselves than have the Las Vegas Gladiators...and for the record...this is not just a one-dimensional change," said Gold. "Most folks will quickly say that surely the signing of Clint Dolezel should earn the Gladiators the league-wide nod. But add to the signing of Clint Dolezel, the signings of "The Samoan Semi" Mathias Vavao from Los Angeles, Anthony Cobbs one of the League's top defensive backs from San Jose, Terrill Shaw Grand Rapids' No. 3 all-time receiver, Marcus Nash who as a rookie last year led Detroit in every single receiving stat (and who gives Dolezel a big six-foot, four-inch frame to throw at) and Maurice Bryant who's played the last four years in Arizona, and you all of a sudden, have another AFL championship contender."
"I believe that the Gladiators can safely include playoff tickets in their season ticket packages as their off season moves have trumped everyone else in the League."
Gold, 50, serves as one of four AFL play-by-play announcers for NBC's nationally televised broadcasts of the AFL on NBC. He has been thrilling listeners and viewers with his calls of numerous sporting events and teams over the years, from play-by-play of NHL's St. Louis Blues to Alabama Crimson Tide football.

The Gladiators are now Armed & Dangerous to challenge the AFL's Western Division with All-AFL quarterback Clint Dolezel and the most prolific receiving core in the Arena Football League, which includes newcomers Terrill Shaw and Marcus Nash.
Often recognized as one of the nation's most affordable and fan-friendly sports leagues, the Arena Football League will begin its 18th season in February 2004, making it the second-longest running football league in U.S. history, trailing only the NFL. On the strength of its Mission Statement and Fans' Bill of Rights, the AFL is America's fastest growing sport. The Austin Wranglers joins the Philadelphia Soul and New Orleans VooDoo as the three expansion teams added for the 2004 season. At least two more teams will be added in each of the next two seasons. A network-TV sport, the AFL will celebrate its second season on NBC in 2004.
