NBA D-League Update
Published on February 28, 2012 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
NETS GOING GREEN
Hey, Gerald Green, you just won the NBA Development League All-Star Game MVP award. Where are you going?
"I'm going to New Jersey."
That exchange never actually took place, but Green is indeed heading to New Jersey, having signed a 10-day contract with Nets yesterday, becoming the 28th Gatorade Call-Up of the 2011-12 NBA D-League season.
Green, who scored a game-high 28 points to lead the West to a 135-132 victory this past Saturday in Orlando, has appeared in 22 games for the L.A. D-Fenders this season, averaging 19.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in 30.6 minutes. The 6-8 forward was selected in the first round (18th overall) of the 2005 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, straight from high school in the last year before the NBA instituted a 19-year-old age limit.
Green played two seasons for the Celtics, having his best year in 2006-07 with averages of 10.4 points and 2.6 rebounds over 81 games (26 starts), as well as winning the 2007 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. Following his stint in Boston, Green appeared in a total of 30 games with Houston and Minnesota in 2007-08, and 28 games in 2008-09 with the Dallas Mavericks. In his four NBA seasons, Green holds career averages of 7.5 points and 2.0 rebounds in 181 games played.
Green had largely fallen off the NBA radar the past few seasons, choosing to play overseas in Russia and China. His only previous NBA D-League experience came during the 2005-06 season on assignment from the Celtics. This year, he opted to give the NBA D-League a shot, and it has clearly paid off.
"The NBA Development is a great league to get exposure, " said Green on Center Court at Jam Session this weekend. "I really have to give a lot of credit to the L.A. D-Fenders organization, and Eric Musselman, who's a great coach and has really helped me work on my game this year."
Green, who's still an explosive leaper, has clearly added more polish to his game, and has a better understanding of what it means to be a professional. Whether or not he sticks with the Nets remains to be seen, but Green is clearly on the right path.
"I have really dedicated myself over the last two to three years to improving my game," said Green. "I've really worked on my defense. I feel my jumpshot is a lot more consistent. I also feel like I'm a much smarter player than I was when I was first in the league."
PROSPECT REPORT
Antonio Daniels, Texas Legends -- The knock on Daniels throughout his NBA career was that he never learned to play the point guard position. Despite exceptional physical talent, which led to his being selected with the fourth overall pick of the 1997 NBA Draft, Daniels never mastered the nuances of playing the point, and essentially settled into the role of athletic combo guard who could handle a bit, defend and be a solid guy in the clubhouse. It's a role he played well, as evidenced by a 13-year NBA career. Daniels is still at it, averaging a very solid 8.7 assists, in addition to 11.6 points and 3.0 rebounds in nine games for the Legends. Last season, Daniels got a late call-up to the Philadelphia 76ers, and could be in the mix for a team looking for a low maintenance professional who's been around the block a few times.
