SHOWCASE ROLLS ON FROM RENO

Four games down, 12 to go. Here's a quick snapshot of yesterday:

Mike James was always known in the trade as a 'scoring point.? In 2005-06 with the Toronto Raptors, James averaged a career-best 20.3 points in 79 games. In just his second game with the Erie BayHawks, James, despite being the only player on the floor without his last name stitched into his jersey, lived up to his billing, scoring 23 points as the BayHawks defeated the Idaho Stampede, 103-101 in the opening game of the 2012 NBA Development League Showcase. James, who last played in the NBA during the 2009-10 season, averaged 10.5 points in 528 games over nine-plus years. More

The roster for the L.A. D-Fenders reads like a who's who of NBA seasons past. Gerald Green and Mardy Collins are former first-round picks. Orien Greene is a former second-round pick with several years of NBA experience under his belt. Head coach Eric Musselman boasts head coaching stints with the Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings. Brandon Costner is living in the moment. The reigning NBA Development League Player of the Month put on an offensive clinic, scoring 29 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including 4-for-7 from behind the arc, as the D-Fenders defeated Springfield, 97-82 in the second game of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. It was perhaps his finest stretch as a pro. Solomon Alabi, on assignment from the Toronto Raptors, scored eight quick points, mostly on dunks, as the Bakersfield Jam built an early 17-2 lead over the Fort Wayne Mad Ants. Then came the foul trouble. After finishing the first quarter with eight points, four rebounds, two blocks and only one personal foul, Alabi was tagged with three second quarter fouls. He then picked up another foul at the start of the third quarter, and was forced to sit for most of the second half. Fort Wayne (7-11) took advantage throughout, trimming Bakersfield's lead to only two at the half, and eventually used a 13-0 run late in the fourth quarter to take a 96-90 lead, en route to a 100-96 win in the third game of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase. Marcus Morris brought lottery credentials. Andre Emmett and Blake Ahearn left with the winning ticket. Emmett, a former second-round pick (2004), who played sparingly in the NBA before heading overseas, scored 36 points, while Ahearn added 26 points and 12 assists, as the hometown Reno Bighorns (9-9) defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, 116-99. Emmett shot 16-for-23 from the field, and also had nine rebounds and a game-high five steals. There's no mystery to his game. He's a stone cold scorer. There's little doubt he left many lucrative offers overseas to take another shot at the NBA. More

PROSPECT REPORT

Jerome Randle, Maine Red Claws -- At the completion of the 2010 Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, a longtime scout said of Randle: "He demonstrated all the ingredients - leadership, passing and shooting ability, toughness, ultra-quick hands and feet, and a point guard's intelligence - that NBA point guards must have. Some smart team should scoop him up in the second round, but I'm pretty sure that even if they don't, he'll make his way into the NBA sometime in the next two seasons." Randle, the 2010 Pac-10 Player of the Year at California, spent his rookie season in Turkey. This year, he was in training camp with the Dallas Mavericks, but was waived and signed by Texas Legends, who then traded him to the Red Claws. He's averaging 12.2 points and 3.4 assists.
