Joseph Spurs Toros at 2012 NBA D-League Showcase
Published on January 10, 2012 under NBA G League (G League) News Release
RENO, NEV., Jan. 10, 2012 - Cory Joseph's first stay in Austin was brief, as in, one season spent at the University of Texas before making himself eligible for the 2011 NBA Draft.
His latest stint is open-ended. On assignment from the San Antonio Spurs, who own and operate the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League, Joseph will be in Austin for however long the Spurs see fit.
By the looks of it, Joseph is on the right path, finishing with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and zero turnovers, as the Toros raced away from the Erie BayHawks, 111-88 on Day 2 of the 2012 NBA D-League Showcase.
Many were surprised when the Spurs spent the 29th overall pick on Joseph, whose numbers and impact at Texas were modest as compared to other available prospects. That said, San Antonio has a stellar reputation for finding talented guards late in the first round - see Tony Parker, and more recently, George Hill.
Like Hill, Joseph is more of a combo guard at this stage of his development, but he's playing a lot of point guard for the Toros. Zero turnovers in 31 minutes will certainly please the Spurs' brass. Joseph also has solid range and is a pesky defender.
Justin Dentmon led the Toros with 26 points and nine assists. Leo Lyons added 14 points, and Lance Thomas, who was called-up by the New Orleans Hornets earlier this season, had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Thomas has shown significant improvement since going undrafted in 2010 following a pedestrian four-year career at Duke. Dentmon, who played at Washington, ranks third in the NBA D-League in scoring (23.1 ppg). Listed at 6-0, Dentmon has an uphill battle to convince NBA decision-makers he's capable of playing the one in the NBA.
Chris Daniels had another solid game for Erie (8-11) with 17 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with 12 rebounds. B.J Jenkins added 17 points for the BayHawks.
Austin (13-3) returns to action Thursday against Dakota. Erie played its second and final game of this year's showcase.
