Naturals pick up first spring victory

SURPRISE, AZ - Held scoreless for the first six frames, the Northwest Arkansas Naturals busted out with a four-run seventh and a five-run eighth to pick up their first victory of spring Friday afternoon as they defeated the San Antonio Missions 9-4.

Ernesto Mejia's three-run homer in the seventh tied the game up, and then five runs in the eighth put the Naturals up for good.

Eduardo Paulino started for the Naturals and reached his pitch count after completing 2 2/3 innings. He allowed four hits, three walks, and one run. That came on a second inning RBI single from Dean Anna.

The Missions would get two more in the fourth and one more in the seventh off of Matt Kniginyzky, who came on in relief of Paulino. Kniginyzky tossed 4 1/3 frames, allowing six hits and the three runs.

Chris Chavez pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Naturals, getting credit for the victory after the Naturals erupted for five in the eighth.

Antonio Jimenez tripled to leadoff the inning and came in to score on a one-out RBI double by Miguel Moctezuma. Moctezuma came in on a double by Derrick Robinson, and Jack Adams' double brought in two more runs. Adams came in when Ernesto Mejia reached on an error by Missions shortstop Andrew Parrino.

The Naturals who are now 1-1 on the spring, head on the road Saturday to Peoria for a game with the West Tennessee Diamond Jaxx. The Diamond Jaxx are the Double-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, and play in the Southern League. Game time is at 1 P.M. local time (3 P.M. CDT).
