Nationals Game Notes July 24th

July 24, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Northern Division leading Potomac Nationals take to Lewis-Gale Field to face the front-runners of the Southern Division, the Salem Red Sox, for the start of three-game set on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. The P-Nats are coming off a very emotional series with the Lynchburg Hillcats that ended with Potomac claiming their first series from City Stadium since April 14-16 of the 2008 campaign. The Nationals' 18-9 record since the All-Star Break is the best in the Carolina League and the defending Mills Cup champions now own the best overall record in the league at 55-39. The 55 wins matches the total they owned after 94 games during the 2008 season.

Salem is 16-10 and currently lead the South by 2.5 games over First Half champion Winston-Salem. "Red Sox Nation South" has an impressive 10-5 record on the road in the second half and have won their last two games. Potomac leads the season-series 8-5 including a 6-1 mark from Salem Memorial Ballpark. The P-Nats swept the Sox in their last series away from Pfitzner Stadium from June 1-3 that including two one-run games and one contest decided by just two scores. Despite winning eight of the first 13 meetings with their state rivals, Potomac is hitting just .232 against the Red Sox this season. Salem has done a great job against Nats leading hitter Chris Marrero who is only swinging at a .157 (8-for-51) clip with two homers and 13 strikeouts this season.

TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Seth Garrison, 23, was the 23rd round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 Draft out of Texas Christian University. Standing 6-5 and weighing 220 pounds, this Dalton, TX native spent all of 2008 as a reliever for the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League (SS-A). In 22 games out of the bullpen, Garrison was 2-1 with a dynamic 1.45 ERA while holding opponents to just a .145 batting average against. He saved nine ballgames in his first professional season while striking out 26 in 31.0 IP. He started his collegiate career at Arizona St. in 2005 where he was a member of the Sun Devils team that participated in the College World Series. Garrison did not play in the CWS due to an emergency appendectomy.

Garrison was just 2-7 with a 5.16 ERA in the first half which included a six-game losing streak from May 9 through June 9. The right-hander was scheduled to make his third start of the season against Potomac right before the All-Star break but several rainouts in Woodbridge kept him off the hill. Garrison did earn a save in that rain-shortened series and since the break, he's gone 4-1 with an amazing 1.45 ERA with a 19:3 strikeout to walk ratio over his last five starts. In 2009, the Texan is 0-1 with an 11.00 ERA (11ER/9.0IP) against the P-Nats with Trent Jewett's lineup hitting .350 with two home runs against Garrison.
