Kinston Indians News Release
Pedro Martinez is scheduled to pitch for the Clearwater Threshers this Sunday at Bright House Field. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start with the gates opening at 3:00 pm.
Martinez, 37, finalized a one-year contract for $1 million last Wednesday with the Philadelphia Phillies that includes up to $1.5 million in incentives. After signing, he was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a mild right shoulder strain.
The right-hander is a three-time Cy Young Award winner (1997, 1999, 2000) and eight-time All-Star (1996-00, 2002, 2005-06). For his career, Pedro has a record of 214-99 (.684) with a 2.91 ERA in 467 games (400 starts) for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1992-93), Montreal Expos (1994-97), Boston Red Sox (1998-2004) and New York Mets (2005-08).
Last year, he went 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 starts for the Mets and this past March he pitched for the Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic.
He feels he can contribute this season, "I don't expect to be the same Pedro that I was when I was 26," the 37-year-old commented, "There's a lot of innings I've pitched since then. It's not the same, but I still feel like I can bring something to the table."
He began his rehabilitation with a 64 pitch simulated game Tuesday afternoon at Bright House Field. "[I felt] real, real good," Martinez stated, "I didn't feel tired. I felt like I could still do a little bit more. I was feeling better as I got going. More confidence. More comfortable on the mound."
Sunday's start will come against the St. Lucie Mets, the Advanced-A affiliate of the New York Mets.
Sunday is the Threshers first Wet N' Wacky day so remember to bring your squirt gun and bathing suit. Plus it's a Bright House Networks Family Day where for only $25 you get 4 Premium Box tickets, 4 Hot dogs and 4 sodas (2 pack for $15).
Tickets are available at the Bright House Field ticket office (Monday- Friday 10am-4pm), by calling 727-467-4457 or on-line at www.ThreshersBaseball.com. The ticket office is scheduled to open at 1:00 pm on Sunday.
