Nationals Fall on Fiery Day in Frederick
April 26, 2009 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Potomac Nationals News Release
FREDERICK, Md- Another frustrating game at the hands of the Frederick Keys left the P-Nats scratching their heads as the team was unable to clinch a series win in Frederick, dropping the finale of their four-game set 13-7 in front of an announced crowd of 3,723. The Nationals have not won a series at Harry Grove Stadium since June of 2007.
A comedy of errors once again put the Keys on top early as three unearned runs came across in the first inning off starter Erik Arnesen (2-1). Arnesen had been spectacular this season, bringing a 2-0 record with an ERA of 1.69 into the contest, but he was uncharacteristically wild from the outset, walking three batters in his four innings of work, one more than he had allowed in his previous 16 innings pitched.
Regular shortstop Danny Espinosa was given a rare day off from his shortstop duties as third baseman Stephen King got the call at his old spot on the diamond. Without regular reps at short, King found himself a bit rusty as he committed three errors in the first four innings of play. a frustrating day boiled over in the fifth inning as King took exception to a called third strike by home plate umpire Kolin Kline, voicing his displeasure before getting the heave-ho from the man in blue.
Pedro Beato (1-2), once thought of as a top prospect in the Orioles' organization, threw well enough to earn himself his first victory of the season, striking out eight Nationals' batters in his five innings of work. The Keys were propelled by four home runs including two by designated hitter Chris Vinyard.
The Nats joined the home run derby as well by tallying a home run apiece from Chris Marrero, Sean Rooney, and Tim Pahuta, but the long bombs were not enough on a scorching day in western Maryland.
It was a wild game which saw the Keys commit six errors, including four from shortstop Pedro Florimon, Jr, but still emerge with a six-run victory.
The difference in the game was the Keys' ability to minimize the damage on their defensive miscues. Of the seven runs allowed, only one was unearned. Compare that to the P-Nats who gave up 13 runs with only eight being earned.
It was a tough pill to swallow on a getaway day in Frederick, but an off day tomorrow will help the P-Nats recuperate and prepare themselves for their three-game set with the Wilmington Blue Rocks starting Tuesday night at 7:05 ET at Pfitzner Stadium.
You can catch all the action live on www.potomacnationals.com with the pregame show starting 20 minutes before the first pitch.
