Nashville SC Energized for Game against the Battery

May 25, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Nashville SC News Release

NASHVILLE - After three consecutive home wins, two in U.S. Open Cup play, Nashville SC will be back on the road for a battle of two Eastern Conference heavyweights when it meets Charleston Battery on the coast of South Carolina on Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT. Both teams enter on lengthy unbeaten streaks as the Battery haven't lost in nine games while Nashville SC hasn't tasted defeat in its last five.

Both teams advanced to the 4th round of the Open Cup this Wednesday as Charleston will travel to Atlanta United while Nashville will host the Colorado Rapids in early June.

Charleston Breakdown

The Battery have used opportunistic scoring and solid defense during its unbeaten run. In the nine games, they have outscored opponents 12-3 only scoring multiple goals in just three of the nine games. One of the biggest reasons for the Battery's efficient offense has been on loan striker Gordon Wild. Courtesy of Atlanta United, Wild has given Charleston a boost scoring three goals and adding two assists in nine appearances in his first professional season.

Defensively, Charleston has been stout allowing the ninth-fewest goals in the USL with nine allowed total all season. That number is even more impressive when accounting for the fact that high-scoring New York Red Bulls II put a five-spot on Charleston at home. In Charleston's other nine matches, they have allowed a paltry four goals, two of which have come at home.

Nashville Narratives

Nashville SC has been on the road a lot in USL play, and that is an understatement. The schedule has been unkind, putting Nashville on the road for six of its first nine USL games. Taking into account this coming Wednesday's road game against Pittsburgh, that number will stretch to seven in 10. Nashville has only picked up one road win in its first five USL road games, and Saturday would the perfect day for a second as SC tries to catch the top of the conference.

While both Nashville newcomers Brandon Allen and Ish Jome saw their first action in blue and gold in Wednesday's Open Cup game, it will be interesting to see if either draws their first USL cap for Nashville SC. Allen already has showed the scoring touch for Nashville, so he could provide a valuable one-two punch up top alongside forward Ropapa Mensah.

Watching the East

One might look at the USL Eastern Conference standings and be confused to see Nashville SC in 10th place and out of a playoff spot. Fear not. Nashville has played only eight games, compared to nine or 10 of every team ahead of SC currently. On a level playing field and calculating via points per game played, Nashville sits in 7th in the East with 1.5.
