Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are excited to announce their 11th player signing of the 2016 offseason. Wheeling has signed defenseman Kevin Schulze to an ECHL contract.
Schulze, 23, joined the Nailers at the conclusion of the 2015-16 campaign, appearing in three regular season games and eight playoff contests. Kevin joined the team at a critical time in the season, as the club was battling to reach the postseason with five games left on the docket. After falling short in his debut on April 1st, Wheeling was victorious in his next two games on April 2nd and 9th, as it ultimately locked up fifth place in the Eastern Conference. The White Bear Lake, Minnesota native suited up in three games of the opening round series against Florida, three games in round two against Reading, and one game in the Eastern Conference Final against South Carolina.
"Kevin Schulze came to us after his college season ended with a great attitude, and who understood to take it all in and learn, while being a really good teammate," said Nailers Head Coach Jeff Christian. "He is an excellent skater, who can fly, and I want him to embrace that speed, using it to step up offensively. He likes it here in Wheeling, and getting a chance to be a part of the long playoff run will give him a leg up on other first year guys."
Prior to making the jump to the professional game, Schulze attended the University of Wisconsin for four years, where he majored in Economics, while skating with the Badgers. On the ice, Kevin appeared in 148 games, totaling ten goals, 36 assists, and 46 points. His most productive season from a points standpoint was his sophomore year of 2013-14, when he accumulated 16. That accomplishment was sandwiched around a pair of four-goal seasons as a freshman and a junior, which marked his career high in that category. Schulze also played one year of junior hockey in the USHL, primarily as a member of the Omaha Lancers.
"I was able to get my toes wet last year, coming into a new place and learning what to do, getting a chance to play in several games," Schulze said. "I love the fans, the guys were great to me, and I loved that we made it so far. I see myself as a puck moving, offensive defenseman, who can create plays with passing and skating."
Kevin Schulze and the Eastern Conference Champion Wheeling Nailers will open the 2015-16 season on October 15th, when they host the Brampton Beast at 7:05.
